Secrets of the Dead [#1002] Deadliest Battle Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 was the largest troop offensive in military history. And the Battle of Stalingrad is arguably the deadliest single battle the world has ever seen. The eventual Russian victory has long been lauded as a shining example of Stalin's military genius. He is said to have baited a much more powerful and technologically advanced German army with a carefully executed withdrawal, then caught the Nazis unprepared in a vicious city-block-by-city-block counterattack that decimated the German forces. By the time the battle was over, more than 1 million lives had been lost and the course of the war had been permanently altered. But 70 years after the battle was fought, newly uncovered documents, survivor accounts, and stunning archival footage are revealing a very different picture of a forced retreat, not a tactical one, and of fiercer fighting in the countryside that has previously been suggested. Secrets of the Dead: Deadliest Battle tells the true story of the battle that turned World War II, and established the Soviet Union as a world superpower for the looming Cold War. duration 56:46   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: none)

Angle of Attack [#101H] Part -One The first half begins by following young men and women on their way to "earning their Wings." In a rigorous course of instruction, they learn to lift off and land a supersonic aircraft on the deck of an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean, still considered one of the most difficult and hazardous tasks. Eugene Ely first attempted the death-defying feat in 1911. Ely's act of landing a fragile bi-plane on a make-shift wooden deck would eventually transform into a weapon of unprecedented power and influence. The episode concludes with World War II and the US victory in the Pacific, when carrier aviation reigned supreme. However, Naval soon would face a threat to its existence - not from an enemy source, but from a competing technology - the nuclear bomb. duration 55:42   STEREO TVG
  • 4:00 am
Angle of Attack [#102H] Part - Two The second half begins with the potential demise of naval aviation, as many in the military establishment promote nuclear weapons and pronounce carrier aviation obsolete. Korea, and later Vietnam, offer a startling reminder of the utility of naval aviation, and undermine the post-World War II conviction that the US will fight all of its wars with nuclear weapons. As the Cold War deepens, the installation of Soviet ballistic missiles in Cuba brings the nation to the brink of nuclear war. Another important function of naval aviation - reconnaissance - rallies world opinion and helps diffuse the crisis. Photographs of the Soviet missiles taken by low-flying naval aviators provide incontrovertible evidence of the Soviet Union's lying. Following the age of nuclear terror came a new low in Vietnam, where doubts about the military merge with racial animosities to undermine morale among naval aviators. The episode concludes by exploring the technological evolutions like GPS-guided weapons that continue to transform the field. Interviews and vivid archival footage from Afghanistan and Iraq highlights the new moral challenges of asymmetrical warfare today. duration 56:01   STEREO TVG

Frank Kearns: American Correspondent Frank Kearns was the award-winning, go-to guy at CBS News for dangerous stories in Africa and the Middle East from the 1950s to the '70s. Nearly killed 114 times while on assignments, his competitors and some insiders thought he was the best who ever worked at the network. Dan Rather referred to him as a "legend around here." He covered the growing influences of communism in Egypt, the Algerian struggle for independence, rooftop battles in Lebanon and street fighting in Cypress, the devastating "African World War" in the Congo, numerous military coups and civil war in Nigeria, the Paris peace talks, and the intense violence by paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland. Then in 1976, CBS told Congress that Frank Kearns worked for the CIA while working for CBS in Cairo, Egypt in the 1950s. Kearns denied it. Combining personal stories from colleagues, competitors, historians, friends and family members, Frank Kearns: American Correspondent tells the history of early television news, geopolitical intrigue during the Cold War, and the nuances and ethics of information gathering in a fast-moving and dangerous world. duration 58:00   STEREO TVG
