Sin, Fire & Gold! The Days of San Francisco's Barbary Coast Since its beginnings, San Francisco has been home to an eclectic array of characters drawn not only to the city's spectacularly beautiful surroundings but also to the vibrant spirit of independence the area seems to foster. KQED's documentary celebrates the people, places and events which have shaped the city over the years. San Francisco can boast not only of physical beauty, but also a history replete with swashbuckling drama and Gold Rush fever. Largely forgotten, much of this history seems to have been buried with the rubble of the great 1906 earthquake. Host Greg Sherwood joins tour guide and historian Daniel Bacon in sifting through the present to uncover some of San Francisco's fascinating past.
Viewers join them for a leisurely walk along the city's original waterfront - the Barbary Coast - and discover the last remaining pocket of original buildings in the area which miraculously survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The tour points out where Gold Rush ships still lie buried beneath the towering skyscrapers of the Financial District, and viewers learn why the Ferry building faces a particular sleepy side street as well as the logical main avenue of Market Street. At times, the tour takes viewers inside some of the buildings along the way to enjoy unique interior designs and significant architectural elements, including the Old Mint, a spectacular national landmark seldom seen by the general public. It also highlights some of the area's more colorful characters, such as famed Gold Rush era performer Lotta Crabtree.

They investigate and come across the Three Little Pigs building a brick house to enter the "Best House of the Year" contest. It is a contest to find the strongest, prettiest, bestest house. They call for the judge of the contest, Mr. Bill Ding, to inspect their house. Just as he's about to announce that it is the best house of the year, in pops the Big Bad Wolf claiming that he'll be able to blow the house down. No one thinks that he will be able to do it because brick is a strong building material, but the Big Bad Wolf has been working out. With one big huff and puff, he blows the house down and blows Elmo away on his skates. The Three Little Pigs do not give up and try to think of a building material that is stronger than brick. First they try building their house out of rock and then out of metal, but the Big Bad Wolf is able to use enough force to blow down both houses! The Three Little Pigs are about to give up, but Leela thinks that "stronger" isn't what they need. What they do need is an innovation, something completely new and different. Elmo has an idea for an innovation. He explains that every time a house blew down, he didn't blow down but was blown away because of his skates. So the Little Pigs build their house on wheels and call for Mr. Ding one last time. In comes Big Bad too, but after a couple of big huffs and puffs, he is not able to blow the house down, because it rolls away. Mr. Ding congratulates the Three Little Pigs and declares their house the "Best House of the Year!" duration 58:46   STEREO TVY (Secondary audio: DVI)

He is partnered with Snuffy who says it's been a dream of his to be lifted into the air like a swan. Alan tries to lift Snuffy, but he's just too heavy. Gina says they need to be a little creative and think of ways they can lift Snuffy. As they observe what's around them, Elmo points out that Chris is lifting a piece of pie out of a plate with a spatula. Gina explains that a spatula is a kind of lever, so if they design a bigger lever, they may be able to lift Snuffy. Using a long board and a crate, Snuffy sits on one end, and Alan tries to lift him by pushing the board down from the other side. But the board breaks. Gina suggests thinking of another way they can lift Snuffy. While looking around again, Zoe sees a girl jumping rope and suggests using a rope. The rope is swung over a beam and tied around Snuffy's stomach, but no matter how hard Alan pulls, he can't lift Snuffy. Gordon comes out to help. He looks at their design and notices that they are missing a pulley. Gordon explains that pulleys are great tools to help lift heavy things. He redraws their design to include a pulley at the top and one at the bottom. Now they're ready to try the pulleys and Snuffy asks if they can perform the whole dance. When the 'lift' part comes, Alan is able to lift Snuffy into the air like a swan! The pulleys work and Snuffy gets to live his dream. duration 58:46   STEREO TVY (Secondary audio: DVI)
