12:00 amMoyers & Company [#214H] Living Outside Tribal Lines * This week's episode begins with a report on striking extremes of wealth and poverty on display in California's Silicon Valley. Facebook, Google, and Apple are minting millionaires while the area's homeless - who've grown 20% in the last 2 years - are living in tent cities at their virtual doorsteps. These are the human faces of economic inequality.
* Later, Bill is joined by writer Sherman Alexie. Born on a Native American Reservation, Alexie has been navigating the cultural boundaries of American culture in lauded poetry, novels, short stories, screenplays, even stand-up comedy for over two decades. Alexie discusses the challenges of living in different cultures at the same time, and shares his irreverent perspective on contemporary American life. duration 56:46 STEREO TVRE -
1:00 amMichael Feinstein's American Songbook [#302H] Let's Dance Fred Astaire was the favorite singer of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and the Gershwins. Why was this dancer so beloved by these composers? That question launches Feinstein into an exploration of the marriage of music and choreography, unearthing rare home movies of Astaire rehearsing on set, and never-before-seen footage of Gene Kelly's Broadway debut in the original Pal Joey. Liza Minnelli, who knew both Astaire and Kelly, dispatches an amazing deconstruction of a dance number from the musical perspective. Feinstein explores the popularity of ballroom dance in America and performs "Singin' in the Rain" and "Let's Dance." duration 56:46 STEREO TVPG

2:00 amNature [#2707H] Wild Balkans Thick forests, vast wetlands, deep chasms - this is a wild, inaccessible place that belongs more to myth than reality. The landscape looks as if it was taken straight form Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." But here there are neither orcs nor elves; rather, bears and wolves. This is not Middle Earth; rather it is middle Europe - the Balkans. Through the centuries this land has burned its way into the soul and spirit of its people. The jagged contours have thrown long dark shadows over the history of the peninsula, always in the middle, between forces of the East and the West. It's as if the bloody history of the Balkans conspired to conceal its natural wonders. The landscape is still untouched and in it are wild animals that have all but vanished from the rest of Europe. duration 55:46 SRND51 TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)
