12:00 amMoyers & Company [#145H] Hurricanes, Capitalism & Democracy * Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast, but Naomi Klein says that the tragic destruction can also be the catalyst for the transformation of politics and our economy. The author of the international bestseller The Shock Doctrine joins Bill to discuss hurricanes, climate change, and democracy. Klein has been in New York visiting the devastated areas - including those where "Occupy Sandy" volunteers are unfolding new models of relief - as part of her reporting for a new book and film on climate change and the future. "Let's rebuild by actually getting at the root causes. Let's respond by aiming for an economy that responds to the crisis both through inequality and climate change," Klein tells Bill. "You know, dream big."
* In the same broadcast, former Federal Election Commission Chairman Trevor Potter - the lawyer who advised Stephen Colbert on setting up a super PAC - dissects the spending on the most expensive election in American history. Many voices are claiming "money didn't matter, Citizens United wasn't a factor," but Potter disagrees. "Super PACs just upped the ante," he tells Bill. "If you're a senator and you have just been elected, or heaven forbid you're up in 2 years, you're thinking I don't have time to worry about deficit reduction and the fiscal cliff. I have to raise tens of thousands of dollars every day to have enough money to compete with these new super PACs... And that means I need to be nice to a lot of billionaires who often want something from me in order to find the funding for my campaign." duration 56:46 STEREO TVG -

2:00 amNature [#2611] The Loneliest Animals The loneliest animals are the most endangered species on the planet. Collected and protected by dedicated scientists, these animals represent the end of the line for their species. In many cases, intensive captive breeding programs have been launched with the aim of sustaining these animals and the hope of returning them to the wild. Viewers will be taken into high-security, high-tech labs where scientists attempt to breed new generations and into the field to discover what forces have led to the demise of entire species. Featured animals include Yangtze turtles under 24-hour surveillance; a baby Sumatran rhino; a special collection of lemurs; the Spix's macaw, a bird declared extinct in the wild in 2000; and "Lonesome George," a giant tortoise from the Galapagos, who is the last of his kind. duration 56:46 STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: none)

3:00 amThis Emotional Life [#103] Rethinking Happiness The last episode explores happiness. It is critical to well-being, yet it remains such an elusive goal for many. What is it, why is it important and how can we attain more of it? Viewers meet individuals facing major turning points in their lives - a job loss, a cancer diagnosis, the death of a child, an accident - as well as those facing more common struggles. Viewers discover the latest research that says we often incorrectly predict what will bring greater happiness, leading us to look for it in the wrong places. As the study of behavior turns more toward positive emotions, the episode explores the latest research on the activities and qualities that foster them, such as meditation, compassion, forgiveness and altruism. The series features remarkable stories of resilient individuals whom scientists are studying to learn more about us all, including a man who overcame an abusive childhood to become a renowned surgeon and a Vietnam veteran who survived torture, solitary confinement and seven years as a POW, and yet emerged emotionally unscathed. Understanding why some people have the ability to bounce back after disaster strikes, while others do not, sheds light on how all of us can lead happier, more fulfilling lives. The film ends by coming full circle to the understanding that the quality of our relationships - with friends, family and larger community - ultimately defines our happiness. duration 1:56:22 STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)
