  Moyers & Company [#138H] United States of ALEC * This week, an unprecedented in-depth report on the most influential corporate-funded political force most of us have never heard of - ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC presents itself as a "nonpartisan public-private partnership". But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense. Using interviews, documents, and personal accounts, the episode explores ALEC's self-serving machine at work, acting in a way one Wisconsin politician describes as "a corporate dating service for lonely legislators and corporate special interests."
  In state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of boilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would, among other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it harder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for harm caused to consumers - each accomplished without the public ever knowing who's behind it. "All of us here are very familiar with ALEC and the influence that ALEC has with many of the [legislative] members," said Arizona State Senator Steve Farley. "Corporations have the right to present their arguments, but they don't have the right to do it secretly."
  "United States of ALEC" is a collaboration between Okapi Productions (the filmmakers Tom Casciato and Kathleen Hughes) and the Schumann Media Center, headed by Bill Moyers, which supports independent journalism and public watchdogs such as the Center for Media and Democracy, whose investigators are featured in the report.

Gretel agrees and thinks they should leave a trail, so they leave a trail of cookie crumbs. When they get to Big Bird's nest, and tell him about what they did, they learn that Cookie Monster ate all the cookie crumbs! Big Bird suggests that they make a new trail and shows them how to get back so they will remember: walk past Oscar's can, past the 123 building, turn at the tree, and past Hooper's store. There will be the subway station. Hansel and Gretel make a new path using paper because Cookie Monster won't eat paper, but the paper blows away in the wind! Next, they make the trail using fish because Cookie Monster doesn't like fish and fish don't blow away. They are finally ready for their play date when the Flying Halibut Fish Jugglers use the fish from the path to juggle! Hansel and Gretel are worried they won't know the way again, but Big Bird reminds them of how to get back. They follow Big Bird's directions and successfully reach the subway station! Then Leela enters looking for her rake and roses. When the raisin raspberry ravioli disappears, too, Detective Alfie Betts decides it's time to investigate to find out why things keep going missing. He needs a team of detectives, and Elmo and Abby quickly volunteer. By repeating the items that are missing, they realize that all of them begin with the letter R. Just then, Mumford runs in saying his rabbit is gone too. Luckily, Telly and Mumford saw someone running away each time something disappeared. They describe him and Detective Betts makes a drawing of who they saw. It turns out to be the letter R! So the team gathers up some letters, puts them in a line-up, and matches the drawing to them. They match it to the letter R, who then runs off in a panic. Elmo, Abby, and Detective Betts chase him all around Sesame Street, but he is too quick. They come up with a plan to bring him in for questioning. They set out a plate of rigatoni, which begins with the letter R, and hide, watching to see if the letter R takes it. He eats the rigatoni, but takes off before they can catch him. To slow him down, the detectives decide to put out a heavy rock for him to take. It works, and the letter R admits to taking all the things that start with the letter R. Sir Topham Hatt is very please with Percy. He has been really useful! It's the country fair in the hills and Duncan is to take the bell from the clock tower to be specially polished. Duncan enjoys the sound the bell makes going over the bumpy tracks. He enjoys it so much that he doesn't listen to the foreman's instructions to go slowly. He doesn't listen to anyone telling him to slow down, until disaster strikes and Duncan hits a dip in the track - the bell bounces off his flat-bed and down the hill. Duncan is horrified. In the quiet, he hears the bell chiming - it's stuck in a tree. Duncan races to it, just in time for it to fall back on his flatbed. Slowly and carefully Duncan takes the bell to the polishers.   Infinity Hall Live [#106H] Open Wings Broken Strings The Open Wings Broken Strings tour pulls into Infinity Hall with Ed Kowalczyk, Emerson Hart and Leigh Nash, all performing individual acoustic sets. Ed Kowalczyk, most famous as the singer/songwriter of the multi-million album-selling alternative rock band Live, performs an unplugged set of his former group's hit singles such as "I Alone" as well as his newer solo work. He is also responsible for creating the Open Wings Broken Strings Tour. Kowalczyk explained the origin of the tour's name. "At the height of songwriting epiphanies, I seem to always break strings 'cause you get so excited. Bang! The string breaks. But there's this moment where you're really soaring. Open Wings Broken Strings just kind of came out of that." Joining Kowalczyk on the tour is lead singer/songwriter Emerson Hart of another alternative rock band, Tonic. Tonic's first album, Lemon Parade, went multi-platinum with featured hits "Open Your Eyes" and "If You Could Only See," which became radio's most played songs in 1997. In 2007, Emerson went solo and signed with EMI/Manhattan Records, continuing his successful career. His solo acoustic set brings a new intimacy to these well-known songs. Another featured artist of Open Wings Broken Strings is Leigh Nash, lead singer of Sixpence None the Richer. With hit singles like "Kiss Me," "There She Goes," and "Breathe Your Name," Sixpence None the Richer successfully reached platinum status over the past decade, along with picking up a Grammy nomination and several Dove Awards. Now Nash is offering a new perspective on the group's biggest hits as she tours with Open Wings Broken Strings. While each artist performs their own individual acoustic sets, the show features a final performance with all three artists on stage together for a cover of The Band's classic "The Weight."
