  Moyers & Company [#138H] United States of ALEC * This week, an unprecedented in-depth report on the most influential corporate-funded political force most of us have never heard of - ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC presents itself as a "nonpartisan public-private partnership". But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense. Using interviews, documents, and personal accounts, the episode explores ALEC's self-serving machine at work, acting in a way one Wisconsin politician describes as "a corporate dating service for lonely legislators and corporate special interests."
  In state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of boilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would, among other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it harder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for harm caused to consumers - each accomplished without the public ever knowing who's behind it. "All of us here are very familiar with ALEC and the influence that ALEC has with many of the [legislative] members," said Arizona State Senator Steve Farley. "Corporations have the right to present their arguments, but they don't have the right to do it secretly."
  "United States of ALEC" is a collaboration between Okapi Productions (the filmmakers Tom Casciato and Kathleen Hughes) and the Schumann Media Center, headed by Bill Moyers, which supports independent journalism and public watchdogs such as the Center for Media and Democracy, whose investigators are featured in the report.

Alan asks Chris to distract Cookie Monster while the club meets. Chris tries, but it's too late. Commander Chiphead, the club's Cookie Master, says that Cookie Monster can only taste Alan's cookies if he's a member of the club. To join, he must recite the Cookie Connoisseurs Club Pledge of Allegiance and follow the three rules: to first look at the cookie, then smell the cookie, and finally, only nibble the cookie to savor its flavor. Cookie Monster thinks he can follow these rules, but devours the first cookie right away! Commander Chiphead is not happy, but gives Cookie Monster another chance. Chris suggests that Cookie Monster try to pretend that the cookie is something else to help him control himself. He pretends that it's a yo-yo, which seems to be working, but once Cookie Monster smells the cookie, he eats it right up.. Next, Cookie Monster tries to pretend that the cookie smells like something stinky, which helps him get past rule #2, but as he goes to nibble it, he loses control again. Cookie Monster has one last chance, so this time he keeps reminding himself out loud that he needs to control himself so that he can stay in the club and get to try all sorts of cookies. The strategy works! Now it's time for the last cookie, and Commander Chiphead is so excited because it is one of his favorites. He loses control and devours the entire thing. When The Man with the Yellow Hat points out how unlikely that is, George decides to investigate further and comes to the conclusion that if it's not an elephant, it must be a Galapagos Turtle who eats a lot of crackers, likes to wrap presents, and use a juicer. When they finally pay their new neighbor a visit, the real story is even more interesting than George's theory.
  * Being Hundley - George gets tired of being a monkey because monkeys have to clean their room, brush their teeth, and go to bed early. So he experiments with being a cat and a pigeon but decides that the best of all is to be a dog like Hundley. Hundley is not at all happy with this plan but doesn't manage to convince George that there's room for only one lobby dog at this apartment building. At first, Clifford enjoys this special treatment but, pretty soon, Jorge's acts of gratitude become overwhelming. When they get to Big Bird's nest, and tell him about what they did, they learn that Cookie Monster ate all the cookie crumbs! Big Bird suggests that they make a new trail and shows them how to get back so they will remember: walk past Oscar's can, past the 123 building, turn at the tree, and past Hooper's store. There will be the subway station. Hansel and Gretel make a new path using paper because Cookie Monster won't eat paper, but the paper blows away in the wind! Next, they make the trail using fish because Cookie Monster doesn't like fish and fish don't blow away. They are finally ready for their play date when the Flying Halibut Fish Jugglers use the fish from the path to juggle! Hansel and Gretel are worried they won't know the way again, but Big Bird reminds them of how to get back. They follow Big Bird's directions and successfully reach the subway station! Soon the truck is empty and Thomas is horrified at what he has done. Thomas puffs to the mill to get a new flour truck, by the mill is closed. The only truck of flour is behind a big line of empty trucks - it'll take forever to move them all without help. So Thomas asks James to help and together they get the flour in time for the children's party. Thomas is pleased to have worked together with his friend. Sir Handle is known to be one of the smoothest engines on the narrow gauge railway. Mr. Percival gives him a special job, to take a load off apples. But he must be gentle so they don't bruise. But Sir Handle has a problem. When he goes up hills he starts to rattle and rock. He asks Peter Sam to help him take the apples. Mr. Percival is impressed, but Sir Handle doesn't admit the truth. Mr. Percival gives Sir Handle another delicate job, but again he asks a friend to help. This time, Mr. Percival gives him an extra special job, taking him and his wife for a picnic. This time, he can't hide the truth - he shudders and shakes. A charismatic force to be reckoned with, she had a great sense of humor, was one of Georgia's first newspaper women and was extremely generous with the money she made from "Gone with the Wind." She struggled with the changing role of women and the liberation of African Americans but also suffered from lifelong bouts of depression, until a tragic accident lead to her death in 1949.
