Adventists This program explores the realities, and some of the ironies, of one of the few American-born religions: Seventh-day Adventism. Several decades later, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg built a breakfast food empire and pioneered a new kind of healthcare facility based on Adventist principles of a healthy lifestyle: a plant-based diet; regular exercise; the avoidance of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs, and a holistic focus on education and community life. duration 56:46   STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Sesame Street [#4277H] Falling Leaves It is a windy autumn day on Sesame Street, and Chris, Elmo, and Rosita hear Stinky calling from underneath a pile of leaves. They dig him out but he says that it will just happen again since he gets covered with leaves every single day. Rosita suggests that they try to figure out which tree the leaves are coming from by taking a leaf that fell on Stinky and comparing it to leaves on some of the surrounding trees to find a match. So the leaf detectives start their investigation by counting the points on their leaf and comparing the color, shape, and size with other leaves until they find one that looks the same. When they discover which tree the leaf came from, Leela and Chris explain that the tree is deciduous, which means it will lose its leaves every fall and grow them back every spring. Since Stinky doesn't want to move, they all think of ways that they can protect him from the falling leaves. First Elmo and Rosita try an umbrella, but Stinky explains that it's not good since it blocks the sunlight. Then they try a big clear bowl that will let in the sunlight, but Stinky tells them that it will keep out the raindrops that he needs. Then they spot some mosquito netting that will let sunlight and rain through but keep the leaves out. Using the netting, small tools and some wood, they build the perfect covering for Stinky and solve the problem! He is so happy that he has such great friends to help him. duration 58:46   STEREO TVY (Secondary audio: DVI)

Moyers & Company [#130H] Suppressing The Vote * The fight against voter fraud is a solution in search of a problem - documented instances of voter fraud these days are surprisingly few. Nevertheless, since the 2010 midterm elections, new election laws passed by Republican-dominated legislatures in 14 states have sought to limit voter registration or require photo IDs in order to vote - identification that for many is too expensive or otherwise difficult to obtain. Such laws, according to a recent report from the Brennan Center for Justice "will make it harder for hundreds of thousands of poor Americans to vote." That's why some say the real goal isn't about fighting voter fraud; it's about enabling voter suppression. < br />This week, Bill talks to Keesha Gaskins, an attorney and co-author of that report, and Michael Waldman, president of the Brennan Center for Justice, about modern efforts to keep minorities and the poor in particular from exercising one of the most fundamental American rights. "When these votes come under attack by this level of partisan gamesmanship, it's completely inappropriate and antithetical to our history," Gaskins tells Bill. "This is a very real political issue, but beyond that, this is a real issue of real Americans being able to access and be self-determinative in how we're governed."
    * Also on the program, Bill talks with Anthony Baxter, director of You've Been Trumped!, an upcoming documentary about Donald Trump's aggressive efforts to build "the greatest golf course in the world" along ancient sand dunes on the coast of Scotland. A veteran journalist, Baxter says what Trump and even local media are hailing an economic boon is actually a disaster threatening the environment and callously disrupting peoples' lives - a perfect example of capitalism run amuck, and how the rest of us pay the price. "It seems to me there's one rule for the super-rich and one rule for everybody else," Baxter says. "And the 99% of people in the world are tired and fed up of having money and power riding roughshod over their lives and our planet. Our planet, I don't think, can afford these kinds of decisions."

Nova [#3816H] The Fabric of the Cosmos - What Is Space? Space. It separates you from me, one galaxy from the next and atoms from each other. It is everywhere in the universe. But to most of us, space is nothing, an empty void. Well, it turns out space is not what it seems. From the passenger seat of a New York cab driving near the speed of light to a pool hall where billiard tables do fantastical things, Greene reveals space as a dynamic fabric that can stretch, twist, warp and ripple under the influence of gravity. Stranger still is a newly discovered ingredient of space that actually makes up 70% of the universe. Physicists call it dark energy because while they know it's out there, driving space to expand ever more quickly, they have no idea what it is. Probing space on the smallest scales only makes the mysteries multiply down there; things are going on that physicists today can barely fathom. To top it off, some of the strangest places in space, black holes, have led scientists to propose that like the hologram on your credit card, space may just be a projection of a deeper two-dimensional reality, taking place on a distant surface that surrounds us. Space, far from being empty, is filled with some of the deepest mysteries of our times. duration 55:16   STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Nova [#3817H] The Fabric of the Cosmos - The Illusion of Time Time. We waste it, save it, kill it, make it. The world runs on it. Yet, ask physicists what time actually is, and the answer might shock you: They have no idea. Even more surprising, the deep sense we have of time passing from present to past may be nothing more than an illusion. How can our understanding of something so familiar be so wrong? In search of answers, Brian Greene takes us on the ultimate time traveling adventure, hurtling 50 years into the future before stepping into a wormhole to travel back to the past. Along the way, he will reveal a new way of thinking about time in which moments past, present and future exist all at once. This journey will bring us all the way back to the Big Bang, where physicists think the ultimate secrets of time may be hidden. duration 55:16   STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)

World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements This program interweaves the story of a remarkable educator and the extraordinary game he developed to demonstrate the complexities of peace and global conflict. Teacher John Hunter's World Peace Game is a hands-on political simulation exercise in which students tackle real-world military, economic and environmental issues. The 9- and 10-year-olds divide into groups, including nation states, the World Bank, United Nations officials, indigenous peoples and even arms dealers. Then, they face daily challenges ranging from insurgencies and global warming to ethnic tensions and natural disasters. Working together, while also balancing the interests of their own "nations," they attempt to achieve global prosperity with the least amount of military intervention. As fun and engaging as the game it profiles, this documentary provides an inspirational look at the lasting impact of one wise and caring teacher on his students and, potentially, the world. duration 56:46   STEREO TVG
