He needs a team of detectives, and Elmo and Abby quickly volunteer. By repeating the items that are missing, they realize that all of them begin with the letter R. Just then, Mumford runs in saying his rabbit is gone too. Luckily, Telly and Mumford saw someone running away each time something disappeared. They describe him and Detective Betts makes a drawing of who they saw. It turns out to be the letter R! So the team gathers up some letters, puts them in a line-up, and matches the drawing to them. They match it to the letter R, who then runs off in a panic. Elmo, Abby, and Detective Betts chase him all around Sesame Street, but he is too quick. They come up with a plan to bring him in for questioning. They set out a plate of rigatoni, which begins with the letter R, and hide, watching to see if the letter R takes it. He eats the rigatoni, but takes off before they can catch him. To slow him down, the detectives decide to put out a heavy rock for him to take. It works, and the letter R admits to taking all the things that start with the letter R. Big Bird and Snuffy need help determining which letter it is, so they use the guests on the show as clues. Their first guest is a box, which begins with the letter "B", so they think the letter must be "B". When they try to put the broken pieces of the letter together, however, it does not form a "B". Big Bird and Snuffy realize the letter must have two straight lines. The next guest is wax, so Big Bird and Snuffy think the letter must be "W", but that letter has four straight lines. The next guest is Leela dressed up as a Tyrannosaurs Rex. Big Bird thinks that this has all become too hard because all of the guests start with a different letter - box, wax, and Tyrannosaurs Rex. After he says the words out loud, Snuffy realizes that all of the letters end with the same sound. They figure out that these words don't start with the same letter, but end with the same letter-"X"! Leela helps them cross the two straight lines of the broken letter together and they form the letter "X"! When Duncan learns this, he is upset, as he already has his birthday flag fixed on his cab ready to take the twins for a special birthday ride. Mr. Percival asks Duncan to collect the balloon, but as he chuffs along the bumpy track the balloon looses a binding. When Duncan sees this, he purposefully goes back and forth over the bumps until the balloon is floating off into the distance. Satisfied that he will now get to give the twins their birthday ride, he arrives at Mr. Percival's only to see the balloon float by the house and rip a big hole in its side. Feeling terrible, Duncan has an idea: to use his special birthday flag as a patch to fix the balloon.
Miss Marvel, the famous storyteller, is visiting the Hills, and Peter Sam is very excited. He rushes about the narrow gauge trying to finish his work early and be the first to see and hear Miss Marvel's story of Proteus, the mystical engine. Taking an old short cut, Peter Sam crashes through a hedge, uncovering an old statue of Proteus that is standing forgotten on an old rusty flatbed. Boiling with excitement, Peter Sam decides he could make a star entrance with the Proteus statue. Redirecting the other engines away, Peter Sam plans to take the glory for him self but the statue is heavy and he crashes! With the help of his friends though the statue makes it to the storytelling and Peter Sam sees the big unveiling.
