Moyers & Company [#149H] Fiscal Cliffs and Fiscal Realities * When it comes to America's economic health, all anyone seems to talk about is the "fiscal cliff," and the perils of our inevitable plunge. But media's favorite metaphor is distracting us from actual and crucial fiscal realities. This week, independent political and economic analysts Bruce Bartlett and Yves Smith join Bill in a discussion that's become as rare as it is necessary - why are Washington insiders talking about the deficit crisis and not the jobs crisis?
Bartlett, former advisor to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, got into hot water with fellow conservatives when he aired concerns about the direction of their ideology and wrote critically of the second George Bush. His most recent book is The Benefit and The Burden: Tax Reform - Why We Need It, and What It Will Take. Yves Smith, who spent more than 25 years in the financial services industry, is the founder and editor of the popular blog Naked Capitalism, and runs a successful management consulting firm.< br />* Following the conversation, Bill shares his perspective on one of the most corrupt D.C. fixtures - the revolving door between Washington leadership and lobbying. That lucrative pathway ensures that "when push comes to shove, corporate interests will have the upper hand in the close calls that determine public policy... no matter which party is in power."
    * Finally on the broadcast, poet and former publishing executive James Autry joins Bill to talk about issues of art and of heart. He shares his poems with Bill and discusses his and his wife Sally's challenging but inspiring experience raising their autistic child.

Nova [#3914H] Mystery of Easter Island A remote, bleak speck of rock in the middle of the Pacific, Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, has mystified the world ever since the first Europeans arrived in 1722. How and why did the ancient islanders build and move nearly 900 giant statues or moai, weighing up to 86 tons? And how did they transform a presumed paradise into a treeless wasteland, bringing ruin upon their island and themselves? Nova explores controversial recent claims that challenge decades of previous thinking about the islanders, who have been accused of everything from ecocide to cannibalism. Among the radical new theories is that the islanders used ropes to "walk" the statues upright, like moving a fridge. With the help of an accurate 15-ton replica statue, a Nova team sets out to test this high-risk, seemingly unlikely theory. duration 55:16   STEREO TVPG

Nova [#3616H] Lizard Kings They look like dragons. Armed with sharp teeth, tearing claws and a whip-like tail, these fearsome creatures are not only powerful, they're also smart. Top predators with intelligence, who learn as they hunt, and who use their brain to track down prey, no matter what. Sounds like these cunning hunters should be a big-brained mammal, but these creatures are reptiles, members of a family that evolved when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. They are the largest lizards still walking the planet, the monitor lizards -- the Lizard Kings. duration 55:21   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Frontline [#1610^] From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians - Pax Romana/A Light To The Nations Explores the life of Jesus and the movement he started, challenging familiar assumptions and conventional notions about the origins of Christianity. Drawing upon new and sometimes controversial historical evidence and interviews with the nation's leading New Testament scholars, the series transports viewers back two thousand years to the time and place where Jesus once lived and preached. The film traces Jesus' life, focusing on the events that occurred after he died, and on his first followers, the men and women whose belief, conviction and martyrdom created a major movement that transformed the Roman Empire in the space of only 300 years.

"Pax Romana" - This segment traces the life of Jesus, exploring the message that helped his ministry grow andthe events that led to his crucifixion. Born in the reign of Emperor Augustus in the Pax Romana - the Roman Peace - Jesus was a subject of the Roman Empire. This first hour looks at how scholars and archaeologists have pieced together a new portrait of where Jesus was born, how he lived and who he was.

"A Light to the Nations" - The second hour turns from the life of Jesus to the period that followed hisdeath, examining the rise of Christianity and concluding with the Fir st Revolt - the bloody and violent siege of Jerusalem and the beginning of a rift between Christianity and Judaism. It also explores new evidence suggesting that Jesus' followers, because of their diversity andthe differences in their cultures and languages, looked at and interp reted Jesus and his teachings in many different ways.

Sesame Street [#4261H] The Shape O' Bots Telly, Elmo, and Rosita are playing Shape-O-Bots, robots that actually transform into shapes to help people. Andy, a guy in need of shapes, rushes in and explains that he needs an octagon to help stop people from crashing into him. Telly tries to transform into an octagon with eight sides and eight angles, but changes into a triangle with three sides and three angles instead. Rosita gives it a try and successfully transforms into an octagon, which Andy uses as a stop sign to stop people from running into him. Andy leaves but soon returns, this time in need of a pentagon, a shape with five sides and five angles. He explains that he is a baseball coach and needs a home plate, which is shaped like a pentagon, so his players won't slide right into him. The Shape-O-Bots do their thing and, once again, Telly changes into a triangle. Elmo is able to help, though, and transforms into a pentagon. Andy now returns one last time needing a rhombus, a shape with four sides and four angles, for the King of Rhombuses, who is missing his. Telly tries to transform into a rhombus, but, once again, winds up as a triangle. Rosita notices that a rhombus is actually two triangles stuck together. Chris suggests that since Telly hit his button one time to become a triangle, maybe hitting it two times will turn him into a rhombus. It works! Four Days at Dragon*Con Every Labor Day weekend, tens of thousands descend upon Atlanta for the largest convention of pop-culture fandom in the Southeast. From science fiction celebrities and their obsessive fans to colorfully costumed characters engaged in mock combat, this documentary explores the "Woodstock for nerds" known as Dragon*Con. What draws these 35, 000 people together? Dragon*Con's inclusive multi-genre, multi-platform approach - combining science fiction, fantasy literature, role-playing, science, history, video games and more - gives attendees the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals. Others, especially the costume designers and creators, seem to gravitate most to the element of escapism.
Featuring interviews with fans, staff, performers, artists, and would-be superheroes, the doc examines the sense of community and acceptance that forms among this often ridiculed and marginalized subculture. It captures the heart and soul of this quirky and fascinating annual event with footage of the Dragon*Con parade and a stirring climax centered around an ambitious attempt to break the world record for dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
