Moyers & Company [#148H] Big Media's Power Play * In 1983, 50 corporations controlled a majority of American media. Now that number is 6. And Big Media may get even bigger, thanks to the FCC's consideration of ending a rule preventing companies from owning a newspaper and radio and TV stations in the same big city. Such a move would give these massive media companies free rein to devour more of the competition, control the public message, and also limit diversity across the media landscape. On this week's Moyers & Company, Senator Bernie Sanders, one of several Senators who have written FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski asking him to suspend the plan, joins Bill to discuss why Big Media is a threat to democracy and what citizens can do to fight back.
    * Also on the show, former Republican Congressman Mickey Edwards shares his perspective on the fiscal cliff debate, the influence of tax pledger Grover Norquist, and why both political parties require radical change. Edwards chaired the Republican Policy Committee, was a founding trustee of the conservative Heritage Foundation, and served as National Chairman of the American Conservative Union.
    * Finally, Bill Moyers offers his own perspective on why there's more to Norquist's unusual pledge than ideology or principle.

Nova [#3704H] Ghosts of Machu Picchu Perched atop a mountain crest, mysteriously abandoned 400 years ago, Machu Picchu is the most famous archeological ruin in the Western hemisphere and an iconic symbol of the power and engineering prowess of the Inca. In the years since Machu Picchu was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, there have been countless theories about this "Lost City of the Incas," yet it remains an enigma. Why did the Incas build it on such an inaccessible site, clinging to the steep face of a mountain? Who lived among its stone buildings, farmed its emerald green terraces and drank from its sophisticated aqueduct system? NOVA joins a new generation of archeologists as they probe areas of Machu Picchu that haven't been touched since the time of the Incas and unearth burial grounds of the people who built the sacred site. duration 54:46   STEREO TVPG-V (Secondary audio: DVI)

Nova [#3914H] Mystery of Easter Island A remote, bleak speck of rock in the middle of the Pacific, Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, has mystified the world ever since the first Europeans arrived in 1722. How and why did the ancient islanders build and move nearly 900 giant statues or moai, weighing up to 86 tons? And how did they transform a presumed paradise into a treeless wasteland, bringing ruin upon their island and themselves? Nova explores controversial recent claims that challenge decades of previous thinking about the islanders, who have been accused of everything from ecocide to cannibalism. Among the radical new theories is that the islanders used ropes to "walk" the statues upright, like moving a fridge. With the help of an accurate 15-ton replica statue, a Nova team sets out to test this high-risk, seemingly unlikely theory. duration 55:16   STEREO TVPG

Halsted This is the true story of the most important surgeon America has ever produced. Surgery in the mid-19th Century consisted of crude and hurried amputations conducted in filthy operating rooms, often followed by horrendous infection. We can thank William Stewart Halsted, the pioneering father of American surgery, for bringing America into the era of safe surgery: sterile procedures, surgical gloves, careful handling of tissues, and local anesthesia. It was Halsted who introduced a scientific approach to medicine, but one set of experiments nearly ended his life and career. One set of experiments cost Halsted his reputation, his friendships, and his piece of mind. Halsted tried the new wonder drug cocaine as a local anesthetic and became addicted for life. This is the remarkable true story of the medical giant who brought America into the age of modern medicine while struggling with a secret addiction. duration 54:38   STEREO (Secondary audio: DVI)

Transplant: A Gift for Life This documentary reveals the powerful emotions and cutting-edge science involved in vital organ transplant. Told through multiple real-life stories, viewers meet a daughter who shares half of her liver to save her father's life; the recipient of a lung transplant who reaches out to his deceased donor's family; and two mothers who nurse their sons through multiple transplants, with only one mother getting a happy ending. Filmmaker Denny Mahoney received a 2008 liver transplant via a live donation from his nephew Matthew. He recovered well, and worked tirelessly to address the fact that every day, 19 people in the United States die waiting for an organ transplant, and every 12 minutes, another person is added to the transplant list. Transplant: A Gift for Life premiered locally on Twin Cities Public Television just weeks after Mahoney's death from cancer in March 2012. In this program, you'll see the real parents and children, co-workers and friends, physicians and scientists whose lives are a testimony to the fact that a tragic death - or inspirational generosity - of one person can pull another back from the brink, offering a second chance at life. duration 56:46   STEREO TVPG
