  • 1:00 am
Moyers & Company [#145H] Hurricanes, Capitalism & Democracy * Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast, but Naomi Klein says that the tragic destruction can also be the catalyst for the transformation of politics and our economy. The author of the international bestseller The Shock Doctrine joins Bill to discuss hurricanes, climate change, and democracy. Klein has been in New York visiting the devastated areas - including those where "Occupy Sandy" volunteers are unfolding new models of relief - as part of her reporting for a new book and film on climate change and the future. "Let's rebuild by actually getting at the root causes. Let's respond by aiming for an economy that responds to the crisis both through inequality and climate change," Klein tells Bill. "You know, dream big."
    * In the same broadcast, former Federal Election Commission Chairman Trevor Potter - the lawyer who advised Stephen Colbert on setting up a super PAC - dissects the spending on the most expensive election in American history. Many voices are claiming "money didn't matter, Citizens United wasn't a factor," but Potter disagrees. "Super PACs just upped the ante," he tells Bill. "If you're a senator and you have just been elected, or heaven forbid you're up in 2 years, you're thinking I don't have time to worry about deficit reduction and the fiscal cliff. I have to raise tens of thousands of dollars every day to have enough money to compete with these new super PACs... And that means I need to be nice to a lot of billionaires who often want something from me in order to find the funding for my campaign."

Nova [#3617] What Darwin Never Knew Earth teems with a staggering variety of animals, including 9000 kinds of birds, 28,000 types of fish and more than 350,000 species of beetles alone. What explains this explosion of living creatures - 1.4 million different species discovered so far, with perhaps another 50 million more to go? The source of life's endless forms was a profound mystery until Charles Darwin's revolutionary idea of natural selection, which he showed could help explain the gradual development of life on earth. But Darwin's radical insights raised as many questions as they answered. What actually drives evolution and turns one species into another? And how did we evolve? duration 1:55:17   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Sounds like these cunning hunters should be a big-brained mammal, but these creatures are reptiles, members of a family that evolved when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. They are the largest lizards still walking the planet, the monitor lizards -- the Lizard Kings. duration 55:21   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Sesame Street [#4261H] The Shape O' Bots Telly, Elmo, and Rosita are playing Shape-O-Bots, robots that actually transform into shapes to help people. Andy, a guy in need of shapes, rushes in and explains that he needs an octagon to help stop people from crashing into him. Telly tries to transform into an octagon with eight sides and eight angles, but changes into a triangle with three sides and three angles instead. Rosita gives it a try and successfully transforms into an octagon, which Andy uses as a stop sign to stop people from running into him. Andy leaves but soon returns, this time in need of a pentagon, a shape with five sides and five angles. He explains that he is a baseball coach and needs a home plate, which is shaped like a pentagon, so his players won't slide right into him. The Shape-O-Bots do their thing and, once again, Telly changes into a triangle. Elmo is able to help, though, and transforms into a pentagon. Andy now returns one last time needing a rhombus, a shape with four sides and four angles, for the King of Rhombuses, who is missing his. Telly tries to transform into a rhombus, but, once again, winds up as a triangle. Rosita notices that a rhombus is actually two triangles stuck together. Chris suggests that since Telly hit his button one time to become a triangle, maybe hitting it two times will turn him into a rhombus. It works! Everyone is happy - especially the Shape-O-Bots. duration 58:46   STEREO TVY (Secondary audio: DVI)
