American Masters [#2503H] Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel No ordinary writer and no ordinary woman --"Gone with the Wind" created two of the world's greatest lovers, Scarlett and Rhett, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and has sold more than 30 million copies. Born into Atlanta's upper crust in 1900, Margaret Mitchell challenged stifling social restrictions at every turn. A charismatic force to be reckoned with, she had a great sense of humor, was one of Georgia's first newspaper women and was extremely generous with the money she made from "Gone with the Wind." She struggled with the changing role of women and the liberation of African Americans but also suffered from lifelong bouts of depression, until a tragic accident lead to her death in 1949. This film examines the amazing endurance of "Gone with the Wind" and reveals the seminal events of Mitchell's life through dramatic re-enactments based on her letters, as scenes from the movie weave together her life and her work. duration 56:46   SRND51 TVPG

New Tricks [#302] Dockers The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) reinvestigate the murky death of Joe Walsh, the General Secretary of the Crane Drivers' Union, whose body was found in the Thames in 1975. At the time of his death, Walsh stood accused of stealing money from the Union's account. Pullman and Standing visit Walsh's daughter, Anita, a glamorous and successful author. She tells them she's always believed the generally accepted story that her father took his own life. Claiming to be ignorant of her father's involvement with union finances, Anita directs them to Walsh's deputy, Brendan Dyer - who subsequently reveals that he and Labour peer George McCready were the last two people to see Walsh alive. As the team delve further into the case, they find themselves at the centre of a political minefield, with suggestions of misappropriated union funds, MI5 involvement and a union leader whose threats of strike action were gravely threatening the national interest. The influential "New Labour" peer McCready is a suspect in the inquiry, but the team know they have to tread carefully. DAC Strickland manages to secure a meeting for them at the House of Lords. McCready, keen to avoid scandal, points the finger of suspicion at Dyer, revealing that Dyer's wife, Rose, was having an affair with Walsh. Throughout, the team's investigation is hampered by Lane's increasingly erratic behavior. Unknown to his colleagues or his wife, Lane has decided to swap the conventional medicines taken to manage his various neuroses for an array of alternative treatments. The new regime leads to alarming outbursts - crazy, even by Lane's eccentric standards. duration 50:06   STEREO

Moyers & Company [#139H] Hispanic America's Turn According to the 2010 census, the number of American Hispanics grew 43% in the last decade to over 50 million. By 2050, Hispanics are projected to number 132 million and represent 30% of the population. As that population evolves, so does their political power. A new report by the Pew Hispanic Center shows that since 2008, America's Latino voting population has grown 22% since 2008. But what are the cultural and political implications of these now well-understood statistics?
This week, Bill goes beyond the numbers with two of our nation's most popular and influential journalists: Univision's Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas. Univision, a Spanish-language US television network, has the largest audience of Spanish-language television viewers, according to Nielsen ratings.
Ramos, says The Washington Monthly, is "the broadcaster who will most determine the 2012 elections," while The New York Times calls Salinas "the voice of Hispanic America." In a candid and comprehensive discussion, Ramos and Salinas discuss their responsibilities both as reporters and representatives of their culture, their aggressive journalistic approaches to both President Obama and Governor Romney, and their strong takes on immigration issues that mean so much to a potentially decisive voting bloc in 2012.
"We are changing the face of America. It's not black and white anymore. We're changing the way we eat. We're changing the way people dance, the way people speak. And we're changing the way people vote." Ramos tells Bill. "No one can make it the White House now without the Hispanic vote - that's completely new."
This year, Ramos and Salinas received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award - the first Hispanics ever to earn the honor.
