  Moyers & Company [#128H] America's "Sacrifice Zones" * There are forgotten corners of this country where Americans are trapped in endless cycles of poverty, powerlessness, and despair as a direct result of capitalistic greed. Journalist Chris Hedges calls these places "sacrifice zones," and joins Bill this week to explore how areas like Camden, New Jersey; Immokalee, Florida; and parts of West Virginia suffer while the corporations that plundered them thrive. "These are areas that have been destroyed for quarterly profit. We're talking about environmentally destroyed, communities destroyed, human beings destroyed, families destroyed," Hedges tells Bill. "It's the willingness on the part of people who seek personal enrichment to destroy other human beings. And because the mechanisms of governance can no longer control them, there is nothing now within the formal mechanisms of power to stop them from creating essentially a corporate oligarchic state." Hedges also makes the case that journalists "take sides," describing the difference between truth and news. "The really great reporters - and I've seen them in all sorts of news organizations - are management headaches because they care about truth at the expense of their own career," he says.

With sheep still in danger, Skarloey puffs into action. Thinking only about the sheep, he realizes that he can do more than he thought! When Duncan becomes a little fed up with his straw deliveries, he decides to find a more important job. He abandons his straw collection to try some other engines' jobs instead. He collects Rusty's sightseers, but is soon distracted by pulling Skarloey's cows to the market - he does neither of his new jobs properly! This makes a lot of people upset - and Rusty and Skarloey get the blame! Duncan tells the truth and puts everything right. When Gordon checks his nest, he finds a truck hidden inside. Gordon tucks him in again, but there is something else in Big Bird's nest that is still bothering him. This time Gordon finds the letter C, which they take out. Big Bird is still uncomfortable, though, and each time he calls Gordon back, Gordon pulls out more objects including a cactus, a number 1, and a pineapple. Gordon can't find anything else in his nest, but something is still bothering Big Bird! Just then, the Princess from the Princess and the Pea story arrives and explains that besides being a Princess, her other job is a sleep consultant - helping people who cannot sleep. Through scientific inquiry, she investigates and discovers a pea. Big Bird is convinced, though, that there is still something in his nest. Susan suggests that maybe Big Bird sleep in the cot for the night instead. Gordon sets up the cot and Big Bird lies down in his new pajamas. But once again he feels something. Finally, Gordon realizes that the problem is the tag in Big Bird's cozy new pajamas. Next, he tried exchanging his binky for a stuffed bunny at Hooper's Store, but that didn't work and he traded it back. Next, he tried leaving it for the binky fairy. Elmo put his binky under his pretend pillow, and Abby did her magic and turned the binky into a dollar bill, but then Elmo took that dollar and bought another binky with it! Baby Bear asks him how he finally gave up his binky, and Elmo explains that he had a talk with Gordon about being a big monster and trying to only use his binky sometimes until he finally wouldn't want it anymore. Then, they sang a song about saying goodbye to his binky, and at the end, Elmo was finally ready to give it up. After hearing the song, Curly Bear realizes that she is ready to say goodbye to her binky too, and hands it over to Baby Bear. Caillou is all ready to throw in the towel as each toss passes him by, but when he sees Sarah and Billy really doing it he gets an opportunity to practice what he's learned. Sir Handel realizes that he's spent so long looking for the best engines to help that he hasn't even started on the job! Luckily Sir Handel sees that his friends ARE the best engines to help and when he asks them to begin work right away, the job is soon done. It's the day of the country show and engine rally in the hills. Madge the snub-nose lorry is to pull the brass band! Interfering Madge takes it upon herself to make sure the engineers get the other engines sparkling clean for the rally. Madge take such an interest that she doesn't get herself clean in good time. She rushes and gets everyone else muddy again in the process! The engineers get to work cleaning again - and this time Madge leaves them to it.   War [#107H] A World Without War In spring 1945, although the numbers of dead and wounded have more than doubled since D-Day, the people of Mobile, Sacramento, Waterbury and Luverne understand all too well that there will be more bad news from the battlefield before the war can end. That March, when Americans go to the movies, President Franklin Roosevelt warns them in a newsreel that although the Nazis are on the verge of collapse, the final battle with Japan could stretch on for years. In the Pacific, Eugene Sledge of Mobile is once again forced to enter what he calls "the abyss" in the battle for the island of Okinawa - the gateway to Japan. Glenn Frazier of Alabama, one of 168,000 Allied prisoners of war still in Japanese hands, celebrates the arrival of carrier planes overhead, but despairs of ever getting out of Japan alive. In mid-April, Americans are shocked by news bulletins announcing that President Roosevelt is dead; many do not even know the name of their new president, Harry Truman. Meanwhile, in Europe, as Allied forces rapidly push across Germany from the east and west, American and British troops, including Burnett Miller of Sacramento, Dwain Luce of Mobile and Ray Leopold of Waterbury, discover for themselves the true horrors of the Nazis' industrialized barbarism - at Buchenwald, Ludwigslust, Dachau, Hadamar, Mauthausen and hundreds of other concentration camps. Finally, on May 8, with their country in ruins and their fuehrer dead by his own hand, the Nazis surrender.
  But as Eugene Sledge remembers, to the Marines and soldiers still fighting in the Pacific, "No one cared much. Nazi Germany might as well have been on the moon." The battle on Okinawa grinds on until June, and when it is finally over, 92,000 Japanese soldiers, as well as tens of thousands of Okinawan civilians, have been killed. Okinawa also is the worst battle of the Pacific for the Americans, and as they prepare to move on to Japan itself, still more terrible losses seem inevitable. Allied leaders at Potsdam set forth the terms under which they will agree to end the war, but for most of Japan's rulers, despite the agony their people are enduring, unconditional surrender still remains unthinkable. Then, on August 6, 1945, under orders from President Truman, an American plane drops a single atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, obliterating 40,000 men, women and children in an instant; 100,000 more die of burns and radiation within days (another 100,000 will succumb to radiation poisoning over the next five years). Two days later, Russia declares war against Japan. On August 9, a second American atomic bomb destroys the city of Nagasaki, and the rulers of Japan decide at last to give up - and the greatest cataclysm in history comes to an end. This humorous documentary examines how this quirky monument challenged one community's definition of art, freedom of expression and appropriate land use. It charts sculptor Jim Reinders' efforts to save his creation from being dismantled.
