  Moyers & Company [#127H] Banking On Greed Just when you think the reputation of banks couldn't get any worse, comes word that we've seen nothing yet. As many as 20 banking institutions, including Barclays Bank, Deutsche Bank, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, UBS and HSBC, are reportedly under investigation for illegal and unethical practices toward protecting their profits at all costs and letting others pay for their mistakes. An MIT professor of finance told CNN, "This dwarfs by orders of magnitude any financial scams in the history of markets."
  This week financial expert Sheila Bair talks with Bill about the lawlessness of our banking system and the prognosis for meaningful reform. Bair was appointed in 2006 by President George W. Bush to chair the FDIC. During the 2008 meltdown, she argued that in some cases banks were NOT too big to fail - that instead of bailouts, they should be sold off to healthier competitors. Now a senior adviser to the Pew Charitable Trusts, Bair has organized a private group of financial experts including former Fed chairman Paul Volcker, former Senators Bill Bradley and Alan Simpson, and John Reed, once the chairman of Citicorp, to explore ways to prevent the banking industry from scuttling reforms created by the Dodd-Frank Act.
  
  Also on the show, Bill talks to scientist and philosopher Vandana Shiva, who's become a rock star in the global battle over genetically modified seeds. These seeds - considered "intellectual property" by the big companies who own the patents - are globally marketed to monopolize food production and profits. Opponents challenge the safety of genetically modified seeds, claiming they also harm the environment, are more costly, and leave local farmers deep in debt as well as dependent on suppliers. Shiva, who founded a movement in India to promote native seeds, sees this as the latest battleground in the war on Planet Earth. "When seed is in the hands of five companies - 75% of the commercial seed is already in their hands. 90% of the corn. 90% of the soy. 95% of the cotton - this is an emergency. Together, they finish the jobs and Billy admits that he did like working with Thomas after all. All the engines think Edward knows everything. When he's given the job of taking the mail, Edward wants to ask for help, but worries that he'll look silly. He doesn't realize that the trucks are in a specific order and delivers the mail to the wrong places. When he realizes his mistake, he is very upset and knows he'll have to deliver them all over again. Edwards collects the mail and tries to deliver them but is in such a rush that he makes a mistake and the parcels go everywhere. Finally he decides that he must ask for help. Each time, Big Bird, feeling rejected, asks Abby to cast a spell to change his appearance in hopes of being accepted into the club. Abby and Elmo attempt to convince Big Bird that he is perfect the way he is, but he is determined to alter his physical attributes. Abby, reluctantly, makes Big Bird's feet smaller, turns him into half of his original size, and eventually turns his feathers blue. Abby realizes that the president of the club is bullying Big Bird so she reports what is going on to an adult. Elmo worries they will be tattling, but they find Chris who explains that they are reporting, not tattling. Reporting is telling a grownup when someone's getting hurt or is in trouble. He explains that it is important to turn to a grownup when someone is being bullied. Chris finds Big Bird and tells him he shouldn't have to change to join a club and that he is wonderful just the way he is. Big Bird admits he likes the way he is and wants to be changed back to being himself. Chris, Abby, Elmo, and Bird start their own club; a club where no one is bullied and everyone is accepted for who they are. Members of the Good Birds Club join too, while Chris plans to help the president understand what it means to be a friend. Dad learns that he's been chosen to compete in the big annual Fishing Contest at the Big Misty Sea, and is one of three contestants. The whole family rides there on the Dinosaur Train to cheer Dad on. They learn that the contestants are Dad, the Old Spinosaurus, and Dad's childhood friend and rival, a huge raptor named Marco Megaraptor. Big Bird is still uncomfortable, though, and each time he calls Gordon back, Gordon pulls out more objects including a cactus, a number 1, and a pineapple. Gordon can't find anything else in his nest, but something is still bothering Big Bird! Just then, the Princess from the Princess and the Pea story arrives and explains that besides being a Princess, her other job is a sleep consultant - helping people who cannot sleep. Through scientific inquiry, she investigates and discovers a pea. Big Bird is convinced, though, that there is still something in his nest. Susan suggests that maybe Big Bird sleep in the cot for the night instead. Gordon sets up the cot and Big Bird lies down in his new pajamas. But once again he feels something. The Dock Manager says that the cargo ship has arrived. Thomas calls for Percy to tell him the news but Percy doesn't believe him and stays hidden. Thomas asks Cranky to help him find Percy. Cranky quickly spots Percy. Thomas puffs over to him and tells him all about the cargo ship. Thomas tells Percy that he is the best hider and that Cranky is the best finder! Toby is given a special job - to take Alicia Botti the opera singer to a special concert. Toby worries about making a mistake. Toby worries so much that he does just that - he forgets to slow at a corner, spilling Alicia's special tea in Henrietta. Then he worries so much that he takes the wrong track. Finally he worries so much that he speeds through a big puddle covering Henrietta in mud. When Alicia Botti sees Henrietta she insists that Toby gets washed. At the wash down, Toby notices the workmen are cheerful and how nobody else is worrying. Later, Toby doesn't worry anymore.   War [#106H] The Ghost Front By December 1944, Americans have become weary of the war their young men have been fighting for three long years; the stream of newspaper headlines telling of new losses and telegrams bearing bad news from the War Department seem endless and unendurable. In the Pacific, American progress has been slow and costly, with each island more fiercely defended than the last. In Europe, no one is prepared for the massive counterattack Hitler launches on December 16 in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxemburg. Tom Galloway of Mobile, Burnett Miller of Sacramento and Ray Leopold of Waterbury are there, among the Americans caught up in the biggest battle on the Western Front - the Battle of the Bulge. Back home, Katharine Phillips of Mobile and Burt Wilson of Sacramento are shocked to see newspaper headlines showing the Germans on the offensive and begin to wonder, "Are we losing now that we're this close?" Meanwhile, at Santo Tomas Camp in Manila, thousands of internees, including Sascha Weinzheimer of Sacramento, are now starving, desperately trying to hold onto life long enough to be liberated.
  At Yalta, Allied leaders agree on a plan to end the war that includes massive bombing raids aimed at German oil facilities, defense factories, roads, railways and cities. In March alone, Allied warplanes drop 163,864 tons of bombs on Germany - almost as much as they have dropped in the preceding three years combined. In the Pacific, Allied bombers are ready to batter Japan as well - but first, the air strip on Iwo Jima, an inhospitable volcanic island halfway between Allied air bases on Tinian and the Japanese home islands, needs to be taken. There the Marines, including Ray Pittman of Mobile, face 21,000 determined Japanese defenders, who, with no hope of reinforcement or re-supply, have been ordered to kill as many Americans as possible before being killed themselves. After almost a month of desperate fighting, the island is secured, and American bombers are free to begin their full-fledged air assault on Japan. In the coming months, Allied bombings will set the cities of Japan ablaze, killing hundreds of thousands and leaving millions homeless. By the middle of March 1945, the end of the war in Europe seems imminent. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are crossing the Rhine and driving into the heart of Germany, while the Russians are within 50 miles of Berlin.
