Freddie is sorry for encouraging the younger engines to go too fast. He uses his knowledge of the hidden tracks to help rescue Rheneas. When Thomas sees that Toby's shed at Arlesden End has a leaky roof, he volunteers to organize getting it fixed for his friend. Thomas tells Toby all about his plan but Toby still seems very sad. With the new roof complete, Thomas asks Toby why he still seems so sad. Toby explains that he liked the holey old roof - the birds would fly in through the holes and make their nests, Toby's home was their home too! Thomas has an idea. He arranges for the wood from Toby's old roof to be made into a birdhouse. Now there are more birds at Arlesden End than ever before.   Sesame Street [#4273H] A Prince of a Frog There is a princess in distress on Sesame Street! She cannot meet her prince without kissing a frog, but the frog keeps hopping away! Elmo and Abby try to help by learning a little more about frogs on Alan's computer. The first thing they learn is that frogs are amphibians and like to gather in groups and croak together. Abby and Elmo pretend to be croaking frogs to attract the frog. It works, and the frog hops over, but before the princess can kiss him, he hops away. Next they learn that frogs like to eat flies and catch them with their long sticky tongues. They convince Allan to buzz like a fly while they croak. It works! The frog comes back, the princess kisses him, but nothing happens. The frog is still a frog. The princess convinces Abby to work her magic and turn the frog into a prince. She does, and after a few tries, poof - the frog becomes a prince. But the frog prince has no idea what it means to actually be a prince. He still wants to hop, eat flies, jump on lily pads, and croak all night. The prince is sad and sings a song about missing his life as a frog. The princess finally understands that the prince can't be happy as a prince if he was meant to be a frog, and she asks Abby to change him back. Caillou helps him with the things he has trouble with, like climbing and swinging on the swings. Then, when Caillou and his friends put on a little play Alan brings the house down as a very believable dragon.   Sesame Street [#4277H] Falling Leaves It is a windy autumn day on Sesame Street, and Chris, Elmo, and Rosita hear Stinky calling from underneath a pile of leaves. They dig him out but he says that it will just happen again since he gets covered with leaves every single day. Rosita suggests that they try to figure out which tree the leaves are coming from by taking a leaf that fell on Stinky and comparing it to leaves on some of the surrounding trees to find a match. So the leaf detectives start their investigation by counting the points on their leaf and comparing the color, shape, and size with other leaves until they find one that looks the same. When they discover which tree the leaf came from, Leela and Chris explain that the tree is deciduous, which means it will lose its leaves every fall and grow them back every spring. Since Stinky doesn't want to move, they all think of ways that they can protect him from the falling leaves. First Elmo and Rosita try an umbrella, but Stinky explains that it's not good since it blocks the sunlight. Then they try a big clear bowl that will let in the sunlight, but Stinky tells them that it will keep out the raindrops that he needs. Then they spot some mosquito netting that will let sunlight and rain through but keep the leaves out. Using the netting, small tools and some wood, they build the perfect covering for Stinky and solve the problem! The next morning, however, Caillou is disappointed to find that he's caught the measles from Rosie and can't go to playschool. All is saved when the whole class comes to wish him well and the puppet show goes on as planned - through the living room window!
  * Caillou's Collection - In the park Caillou starts a new hobby - collecting rocks! He finds out that Grandpa has a rock collection too, and they go to the quarry where Caillou watches a worker break up big stones into smaller ones. Caillou gets to pick out a rock for Grandpa that ends up in Grandpa's new rock garden. Gordon gets the job and boasts that he is the strongest engine. The other engines tell Gordon that he'll soon see just how strong Big Strong Henry is, a promise that has Henry worried. Henry's friends soon find a way for Henry to prove his strength to Gordon - by pulling Farmer McColl's loads so Gordon can see. This makes Gordon cross and Henry decides he quite likes being Big Strong Henry. Henry takes his heaviest load yet, twenty trucks of hay bales, up a hill - but they're too heavy! The trucks derail at the bottom of the hill, while Gordon takes his last heavy load, some cows. Henry is very sorry for causing trouble, but spots that Gordon has puffed away leaving one of his trucks is open - letting all the cows escape! Clever Henry uses his hay to lead the cows all the way to Farmer McColl's proving that you don't need to be strong to be useful! Thomas is to give train rides at a children's fancy dress party. He daydreams about what costume to wear. A trip to the washdown gives him the idea to go as a big bubble bath, but the bubbles get into his eyes and he crashes into Toby, who is carrying taffy for the taffy apples. Toby is damaged so Thomas offers to take the taffy for Toby. On his way to the party Thomas again daydreams about what costume to wear. He doesn't see some points have changed and races into a siding. He hits the buffers and taffy goes all over him. Thomas is running late so takes a shortcut down an old overgrown line. Branches and leaves stick to him. Thomas arrives at the party with the taffy just in time. He's sorry to be in such a mess. In fall 1943, after almost two years of war, the American public is able to see for the first time the terrible toll the war is taking on its troops when Life Magazine publishes a photograph of the bodies of three GIs killed in action at Buna. Despite American victories in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea, the Japanese empire still stretches 4,000 miles, and victory seems a long way off. Back home, the public is devastated by color newsreel footage of the furious battle, including the bodies of Marines floating in the surf, and grows more determined to do whatever is necessary to hasten the end of the war. African Americans, asked to fight a war for freedom while serving in the strictly segregated armed forces, demand equal rights, and the military reluctantly agrees to some changes. Japanese-American men, originally designated as "enemy aliens," are permitted to form a special segregated unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. In Hawaii and in the internment camps, thousands sign up, including Robert Kashiwagi, Susumu Satow and Tim Tokuno of Sacramento.
