Washington Week [#5717] The battle over the identity of the Republican Party intensified this week as another establishment senator made an impassioned plea to say "enough" to President Trump.
Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., announced he will not seek reelection and will no longer be "complicit or silent" about the president's "unacceptable" behavior.
Populist leaders in the Republican Party, including former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, cheered Flake's departure as well as the announced retirements of Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee and seven Republicans in the House.
The GOP existential crisis comes at the same time party leaders are trying to piece together support for a major overhaul of the tax system.
The Republican framework would cut taxes by $1.5 trillion over the next decade and lower the number of tax brackets from seven to three. The long-promised tax plan is considered essential by Congressional Republicans hoping to build momentum ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
Robert Costa will discuss the battle inside the Republican Party and how it affects the tax plan with:
Peter Baker of The New York Times
Ed O'Keefe of The Washington Post
    Nancy Cordes of CBS News
Julie Pace of the Associated Press

Great Performances [#3813B] Pavarotti: A Voice for the Ages Like Enrico Caruso before him, Luciano Pavarotti extended his presence far beyond the limits of Italian opera. Audiences adored his larger than life personality, childlike charm, generous figure, and happy go lucky style. This program celebrates the 50th anniversary since his career debut in Amsterdam, Vienna, Zurich and finally London where he substituted for the ailing Giuseppe di Stefano as Rodolfo in La Boheme.
Even today, it is his powerful sound with its natural grace and brilliant color which still leads many to consider him the world's greatest voice. It is Pavarotti who brought opera to the masses and made football fans worldwide fall in love with "Nessun dorma." This program includes that hit and other beloved arias from La Boheme, Rigoletto and Aida; Neapolitan songs in arrangements by Henry Mancini including "Mamma" and "O Sole Mio"; favorite sacred songs like "Ave Maria" and "O Holy Night"; as well as popular duets with Bono, Sting and Eric Clapton.

But fewer than 5 percent of American cancer patients participate in a key part of the research for a cure -- clinical trials testing new cancer treatments. NewsHour Weekend's Christopher Booker reports on efforts by researchers to improve that low participation rate in cancer trials and to improve data sharing by doctors, all in the hope of extending and saving lives. duration 26:46   STEREO TVRE
