Nova [#3711H] Building The Great Cathedrals Carved from 100 million pounds of stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spiderweb of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels of human achievement and artistry. But how did medieval builders reach such spectacular heights? Consuming the labor of entire towns, sometimes taking 100 years to build, these architectural marvels were crafted from just hand tools and stone. Many now teeter on the brink of catastrophic collapse. To save them, an international team of engineers, architects, art historians and computer scientists searches the naves, bays, and bell towers for clues to how the dream of these heavenly temples on earth came true. Nova's teams perform hands-on experiments to investigate and reveal the architectural secrets that the cathedral builders used to erect their soaring, glass-filled walls. This program reveals the hidden formulas, drawn from the pages of the Bible itself, that drove medieval builders ever upward. duration 54:46   STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Iceberg That Sank The Titanic Many millennia ago, a snowflake landed at the head of a glacier in the Arctic Circle. In an instant, it turned from a symbol of purity to an agent of death as it triggered the creation of an iceberg - spat from the tongue of the mother glacier and into the ocean. Cameras explore every face of this monstrous glacier, revealing an arterial network of melt-water rivers and frozen masses of rocks and vegetation suspended in the ice, and also the nature of the iceberg. There is a duality to its character. Long before it was a life-taker, it was home to an abundance of arctic wildlife. Passing down through the Arctic Circle and into the North Atlantic, the iceberg was set on an unstoppable collision course that would result in over 1400 deaths. Were warnings heeded? Could the crew of the Titanic have done more to save the passengers - perhaps using the iceberg as a giant lifeboat? duration 48:31   STEREO TVG

Dinosaur Wars: American Experience [#2303H] In the summer of 1868, paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh boarded a Union Pacific train for a sight-seeing excursion through the heart of the newly-opened American West. While most passengers simply saw magnificent landscapes, Marsh soon realized he was traveling through the greatest dinosaur burial ground of all time. Ruthless, jealous and insanely competitive Marsh would wrestle over the discovery with the other leading paleontologist of his generation -- Edward Drinker Cope. Over time, the two rivals would uncover the remains of dozens of prehistoric animals, including 130 species of dinosaur, collect thousands of specimens, provide ample evidence to prove Charles Darwin's hotly disputed theory of evolution and put American science on the world stage. But their professional rivalry eventually spiraled out of control. What began with denigrating comments in scientific publications, led to espionage, the destruction of fossils and political maneuvering that ultimately left both men alone and almost penniless. duration 56:01   STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Angels A captivating documentary that explores the historical and modern-day role of angels in our society. The image of an angel is instantly recognizable; we tend to think of them as white-winged, halo-headed characters from the Bible - and with good reason. But not all angels are angelic! Angels protect, advise, judge, translate, sing, heal, entertain, and even cook. This film reveals why angels have such a central role in so many cultures, and explores how angels pervade everyday life. It also features first-hand accounts from those who claim they have guardian angels looking after them, and takes a look at the darker side of these spiritual beings, as exemplified by the Hell's Angels. duration 52:05   STEREO TVG
