2:00 amPioneers of Television [#304H] Miniseries Miniseries still rank among the top-rated programs in television history; they were major events that captured the nation's imagination. "Roots" was the biggest - interviewed about that groundbreaking series are stars LeVar Burton, Louis Gossett Jr., Leslie Uggams, Ben Vereen, John Amos, Georg Stanford Brown and Ed Asner. This episode also considers the very first miniseries, "Rich Man, Poor Man," as stars Peter Strauss and Susan Blakely offer fresh insights. All of the key players from the landmark miniseries "The Thorn Birds" appear, providing surprising commentary about the romance seen by more viewers than any other in TV history. New interviews with Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown mark the 30th anniversary of one of television's biggest events. duration 55:46 STEREO TVPG

3:00 amPioneers of Television [#201H] Science Fiction Storytellers Gene Roddenberry, Irwin Allen and Rod Serling created the storylines and characters behind the best-loved futuristic television of their time. But as Roddenberry's "Star Trek" competed for ratings with Allen's "Lost in Space," each show's creator aimed for a very different direction. This episode explores how Roddenberry and Serling (of "The Twilight Zone") used the future as a stage for modern morality plays, and William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols and other science-fiction stars describe how they prepared to interact on-camera with a malevolent alien force ... or, perhaps, a giant radish. duration 56:46 STEREO TVG

4:00 amFrontline [#3105] Cliffhanger This February, as the nation faced yet another round of fiscal crises, Frontline investigated the inside history of how Washington has failed to solve the country's problems of debt and deficit. Drawing on interviews with key players in Congress and the White House, Frontline goes behind the scenes to show how a clash of politics and personalities has taken the nation's economy to the edge of the "fiscal cliff," and now to a second round of standoffs over the debt ceiling and sequestration. The film explores the deep ideological divide inside the Republican Party and the struggle between House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Speaker John Boehner as they take on President Obama and the Democrats. duration 56:46 STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: none)

5:00 amUncommon Vision: The Life and Times of John Howard Griffin John Howard Griffin is best known as the white man who in 1959 disguised himself as a black man and then traveled anonymously through the heart of Dixie. From his experiences, he wrote Black Like Me, a groundbreaking best seller published in 1960 that today stands as a testament to Griffin's moral commitment and is a document of one of the more extraordinary events of the Civil Rights era. The book revealed the author's first-hand exposure to the harsh realities that were faced by black citizens each day in the Jim Crow South. Following the publication of the book, Griffin was the target of death threats and was hanged in effigy in his hometown in Texas. Through dramatic re-enactments, evocative readings from the book, strong archival materials, and interviews with those who knew John Howard Griffin, this revealing biography looks at the life of this remarkable social activist. It also examines how Griffin's deep spiritual commitment carried him through an uncanny life - segregated childhood in Fort Worth, a medic with the French Underground in WWII, blinded by war injuries, and a prolific writer and photographer. duration 57:14 TVG
