2:00 amBattle of Midway On June 4, 1942 - just six months after Pearl Harbor - the massed forces of the US and Japanese fleets met for a decisive showdown. Thanks to both sides' use of a relatively new piece of technology - the aircraft carrier - this battle would be decided without the ships of either fleet ever coming within sight of each other. At Midway, America's carrier pilots destroyed Japan's best ships and killed nearly four thousand men - the cream of Japan's naval elite. It was a blow the Japanese would never recover from, making the outcome of the conflict in the Pacific virtually inevitable and releasing precious American military resources for the conflict in Europe. duration 50:14 STEREO TVRE

3:00 amWar [#103H] A Deadly Calling Examines America's reaction to the war. In fall 1943, after almost two years of war, the American public is able to see for the first time the terrible toll the war is taking on its troops when Life Magazine publishes a photograph of the bodies of three GIs killed in action at Buna. Despite American victories in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea, the Japanese empire still stretches 4,000 miles, and victory seems a long way off. Back home, the public is devastated by color newsreel footage of the furious battle, including the bodies of Marines floating in the surf, and grows more determined to do whatever is necessary to hasten the end of the war. African Americans, asked to fight a war for freedom while serving in the strictly segregated armed forces, demand equal rights, and the military reluctantly agrees to some changes. Japanese-American men, originally designated as "enemy aliens," are permitted to form a special segregated unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. In Hawaii and in the internment camps, thousands sign up, including Robert Kashiwagi, Susumu Satow and Tim Tokuno of Sacramento. They are sent to Mississippi for training, where they are promised they will be treated "as white men." duration 1:56:46 SRND51 TV14 (Secondary audio: DVI)

5:00 amUnforgettable: The Korean War A powerful journey with a diverse group of Korean War veterans as they recall their memories and emotions of the war and of America in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when young men from all over the country were being shipped off to defend South Korea against the advancing Red Army. This film brings back memories of the un-won war that never ended - no one even wanted to declare it a war: it was the "Korean conflict," a "police action" and finally, "the forgotten war. " No matter the name, the Korean War was still a very fatal war, killing tens of thousands of US soldiers and affecting many more lives at home. duration 56:46 STEREO TVPG
