    * With the state's deficit now soaring beyond projections to $16 billion, Gov. Brown's May budget revision calls for deeper cuts to health and welfare programs and a 5% reduction in pay for state workers, with the threat of more cuts to come if voters do not approve his tax measure in November.
    * Proposition 28 on the June ballot would modify California's strict term limits, enacted in 1990, by reducing time in the state Legislature from 14 years to 12, but allowing the entire time to be served in one house rather than divided between the Assembly and Senate.

Washington Week [#5147H] The 2012 presidential campaign trail was littered with attacks and counterattacks between President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney this week.
First the Obama campaign launched an aggressive ad challenging Romney's business background and job-creation record when he worked for the private equity firm Bain Capital. At rallies in Ohio, Vice President Joe Biden sharpened the attacks against Romney and all Republicans saying "They're not bad, they just don't get it." Then The New York Times broke the story that a powerful GOP super PAC was planning to spend $ 10M on a strategy to resurrect President Obama's link to his former controversial minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. After Romney repudiated the attack strategy, the super PAC apparently scrapped the plan.
    * With recent polls showing Obama and Romney in a dead heat, we'll get analysis on the 2012 presidential race developments from Jeff Zeleny of The New York Times and Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post.
    * Despite record-low approval ratings and the image of being a "do-nothing Congress," lawmakers on Capitol Hill seem headed to replaying last summer's partisan debate over raising the debt ceiling. David Wessel of The Wall Street Journal will examine where there may be room for compromise to avoid the gridlock that brought the government to the brink of default last year.
    * The Justice Department has launched an investigation into J.P. Morgan Chase and the high-risk trading that cost this prominent bank more than $2 billion. John Harwood of CNBC and The New York Times will examine the fallout from the financial fiasco, concerns about the ripple effect on the broader financial system, and the White House calls for tougher enforcement of current Wall Street regulations.

Johnny Carson: American Masters Johnny Carson was seen by more people than anyone else in American history - a fixture of national life, a piece of the cultural furniture, a part of the Zeitgeist. In exploring the career, the complexities and contradictions of the biggest star television has ever produced, American Masters had his estate's first-time-ever cooperation and permission - unrestricted entree into his personal archives and, perhaps, Carson's greatest legacy - all episodes of The Tonight Show from 1970-1992.
Clues about his life, stories about his childhood and early days in the business can be found there - as well as in the expansive family albums and memorabilia. Original interviews with friends, colleagues, his wives and the many performers who appeared, or began, on The Tonight Show, offer additional texture and context - Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin, among others.

Opponents say it would hurt the very people it's designed to help by denying them the only loans they can get.
