Run Silent, Run Deep [#1022] (1958) This taut WWII submarine drama features a smart script, strong performances and well-executed action. Clark Gable stars as Commander "Rich" Richardson, obsessed with sinking the Japanese ship that shot his boat out from under him in a 1942 encounter in the Bongo Straits of Japan. About a year later, Richardson is given command of the USS Nerka, with an existing crew loyal to their Executive Officer Lt. Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), who many think should have been given the helm instead. Great Performances [#3412] Harlem In Montmartre This program tells the story of the jazz age in Paris between the first and second World Wars, exploring an often neglected era in African-American cultural history. After peace was signed at Versailles, many black Americans remained in Europe rather than return to the brutal segregation and racism of America. Over the next two decades, they created an expatriate community of musicians, entertainers and entrepreneurs, primarily congregating in Paris's hilly Montmartre neighborhood. Some achieved enduring fame, while others have faded into history. Inspired by the book by William A. Shack and utilizing rare archival material from both France and America, this documentary features footage of such key figures as James Reese Europe, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, Bricktop, Eugene Bullard, Django Reinhardt, and many more. duration 1:25:38   STEREO TVPG

Moyers & Company [#104H] How Do Conservatives and Liberals See The World? Our country is more politically polarized than ever. Is it possible to agree to disagree and still move on to solve our massive problems? Or are the blind leading the blind - over the cliff? This weekend, Bill and moral psychologist Jonathan Haidt talk about the psychological underpinnings of our contentious culture, why we can't trust our own opinions, and the demonizing of our adversaries. "When it gets so that your opponents are not just people you disagree with, but... the mental state in which I am fighting for good, and you are fighting for evil, it's very difficult to compromise," Haidt tells Moyers. "Compromise becomes a dirty word."

Annie Oakley: American Experience In 1926, just a few months before Annie Oakley's death, Will Rogers described her as "the greatest woman rifle shot the world has ever produced." As the star attraction of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, she thrilled audiences around the world with her daring shooting feats. Her act helped fuel turn-of-the-century nostalgia for the vanished, mythical world of the American West. Over time she became an American legend -- the loud, brassy, cocksure shooter celebrated in the musical "Annie Get Your Gun." But that legend had little to do with the real Annie Oakley. Although famous as a Western sharpshooter, Oakley lived her entire life east of the Mississippi. A champion in a man's sport, she forever changed ideas about the abilities of women, yet she opposed female suffrage. Her fame and fortune came from her skill with guns, yet she was a Quaker. This film is the story of a five-foot-tall sharpshooter who pulled herself out of the depths of poverty to become known the world over as a symbol of the Wild West. It chronicles Oakley's life, from her childhood in Ohio to her world tours with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. duration 54:10   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Jesse James: American Experience The story of Jesse James remains one of America's most cherished myths and one of its most wrong-headed. Jesse James, so the legend goes, was a Western outlaw, though, in fact, he never went west; America's own Robin Hood, though he robbed from the poor as well as the rich, and kept it all for himself; and a gunfighter whose victims, in reality, were almost always unarmed. Less heroic than brutal, James was in fact a product, from first to last, of the American Civil War; a Confederate partisan of expansive ambition, unbending politics and surprising cunning, who gladly helped invent his own valiant legend. A member of a vicious band of Missouri guerrillas during the war, James sought redemption afterwards. But as this AMERICAN EXPERIENCE production reveals, year by year, he rode further from it, redeeming instead the great and glorious memory of the Old South. In a life steeped in prolific violence and bloodshed, he met what was perhaps the most fitting end; like so many of his own victims, James himself was an unarmed man, shot in the back. duration 54:05   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Edward & Wallis - A Story of Love and Destiny Many princes who were born to be kings have vowed to be true to their lady loves. However, in a thousand years of the British monarchy only one has dared to resign his crown for a woman's love. This documentary is the real history of a man born to be king who refused to behave like one. Instead, he believed he could use the power and majesty of the throne to pursue his obsession with his twice-divorced American mistress, Wallis Simpson. It recounts a familiar tale, but from a fascinating new perspective, exploring warning signs that were evident in Edward from an early age that ultimately led to years of scandal and controversy in the 20th century British monarchy. duration 52:04   STEREO TVPG
