    Spark! [#707H]
Kitka, May, Arts and the Economy
    * For 30 years, the all-female vocal group Kitka has performed music rooted in Eastern European musical traditions. In a recent trip to rural Ukraine, they studied Slavic folk songs that previously only existed in the memories of the old women who live there. Spark joins Kitka as they rehearse and perform a new performance based on the songs and stories that were passed down to them.
    * Next, the mixed-media work of Santa Cruz artist Victoria May is inspired by the intricate process of custom dress-making. A former seamstress by trade, May now makes sculptural textile pieces that blend traditional hand sewing techniques with evocative and unexpected materials.
    * Then, in a special collaboration with PBS' The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, we investigate how the current economy is affecting artists in the Bay Area. How are they coping with the economic downturn? Some scholars and activists think hope lies in government support. What can we learn from the historic WPA programs that provided employment for 8.5 Million Americans during the 1930's?

    Secrets of the Dead [#902]
    Airmen and the Headhunters
This episode investigates the survival story of a crew of airmen shot down over the jungles of Japanese occupied Borneo during Word War II. A US bomber crew, stranded in a snake infested jungle, was rescued by Dayak tribesmen -- a tribe known for taking the heads of their enemies. The Dayaks fed and protected the airmen before leading them to the base of the maverick British special ops officer, Major Tom Harrisson, who was fighting a guerrilla war against the Japanese with a band of Australian Commandoes. In what is the most unlikely survival story of World War II, the Airmen's hopes of escape were left in the hands of the eccentric Major Harrisson who orchestrated their rescue by building a bamboo runway deep in the Borneo interior. duration 54:47   CC STEREO DVI TVPG

George accurately measures Hundley's food, graciously lets him watch his favorite TV show, "Poodle Groomers," and even rearranges his living room to make Hundley feel more at home. While George searches for the fawn Bill spotted, he finds an unusual set of tracks that look like a cross between a gigantic duck and a colossal snake. George decides there must be a duckbilled dinosaur on the loose-which would make for a perfect photo for Nature Week! George leaves a trail of fruits and vegetables to lure the dinosaur, but then he remembers that not all dinosaurs are friendly! George frantically rushes to warn everyone, when he bumps into the real culprit behind those tracks - and it's very different than a dinosaur!

    Secrets of the Dead [#503Z]
    Voyage of the Courtesans
In 1789, more than 200 female thieves, prostitutes and con-artists, rounded up from London's most notorious prisons, were shipped off to an Australian penal colony aboard a leaky vessel named the Lady Juliana. Once aboard, the wily women turned their banishment into opportunity, transforming their ship into a rowdy floating brothel. By the time they reached Botany Bay, they were fit, healthy and some were even self-supporting. Instead of a life of servitude, they took control and - along with their offspring - helped guarantee a new world's future. With dramatic reconstructions, powerful imagery and actual ship journals, this program brings to light the true story of the Lady Juliana. Through intensive research and the use of long-hidden historical records, the film also tracks down the women's contemporary descendants and watches as they uncover the surprising truth about their ancestors. Tony-winner Liev Schreiber narrates. duration 56:46   STEREO DVI TVPG
