Whispers of Angels: A Story of the Underground Railroad
Duration: 59:20 STEREO TVG
In the first half of the 19th century, the Eastern Line of the Underground Railroad functioned to funnel fugitive slaves from their lives in captivity to freedom in the North. A corridor of courage existed from Maryland's eastern shore through the border state of Delaware and into Pennsylvania. Two men formed an extraordinary relationship that successfully helped to free thousands of slaves. Thomas Garrett, a white Quaker abolitionist in Wilmington, Delaware and William Still, a black son of slaves in Philadelphia, (along with Harriet Tubman and many others) heroically risked their own freedom for that of others. Actors Edward Asner and Blair Underwood respectively play these roles in dramatic reenactments in this documentary, which highlights unique racial cooperation not seen again until the 1960's in America. The program includes dramatic reenactments of escapes, trials, slave auctions and clandestine meetings.
