Ingrid Bergman stars as Paula Alquist, a shy heiress who, in her youth, found the body of her famous Aunt Alice, an entertainer murdered in their home. At the time of the tragedy, Paula is sent away to boarding school, and returns to London ten years later with her new husband Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer), whom she married after a whirlwind romance. Shortly after moving back into her childhood home, however, she begins to lose her grip on reality, and becomes convinced her husband is trying to drive her insane. Joseph Cotton stars as Brian Cameron, a fan of Paula's aunt, now a Scotland Yard detective, who takes a special interest in Paula. Directed by George Cukor (not Alfred Hitchcock as some assume), Bergman won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her performance. This film also marks the memorable film debut of Angela Lansbury as Nancy Oliver, a maid unwittingly drawn into Anton's plans. The film also took an Oscar for Best Art Direction, along with 5 other nominations, including Best Actor for Boyer and Supporting Actress for Lansbury.
