A delightful musical in which Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) tries to forget his former dance partner Nadine Hale (Ann Miller) by teaming up randomly with the next dancer he meets, who turns out to be Hannah Brown (Judy Garland). Eventually the new dance team becomes so successful, they're invited to join the Ziegfeld Follies, where Nadine has also landed a spot. Should Hewes accept the offer? Should he let Hannah know he's fallen in love with her, or keep their partnership strictly business?
The film won an Oscar for musical scoring (Roger Edens and Johnny Green). Astaire had thought to retire in 1946, but came out of retirement for this film, replacing Gene Kelly when he broke his ankle. Garland replaced Cyd Charisse in this film when Charisse became pregnant. Garland's health prevented her from teaming with Astaire again in the 1949 follow-up, The Barkleys of Broadway, in which she was, in turn, replaced by Ginger Rogers.
