Chicago Symphony Orchestra: Pierre Boulez Conducts Mahler's 7th (Episode #3601H)

KQED Life: Sun, Apr 28, 2013 -- 10:30 PM

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Conductor Emeritus Pierre Boulez leads the Windy City's internationally renowned orchestra in Gustav Mahler's "Symphony No. 7," taped over two nights, October 14 and 15, 2010. Boulez replaces the orchestra's ailing Music Director Riccardo Muti who was to have led the orchestra in a different musical program over those nights. One of Chicago's most popular conductors, Boulez, winner of 26 Grammy Awards, is a composer, conductor, and tireless advocate for new music and one of the most important musical and intellectual figures of our time. He served as CSO's principal guest conductor - only the third person to hold that title - from 1995 until 2006, when he was named Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus.

Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy (Episode #3806()

KQED Plus: Wed, Apr 24, 2013 -- 7:00 PM

Why has the Broadway musical proven to be such fertile territory for Jewish artists of all kinds? From Broadway's golden age, names like Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, the Gershwin's, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim immediately come to mind. More recently, Broadway babies such as Stephen Schwartz, Marc Shaiman and Andrew Lippa represent a sampling of the Jewish talents who continue to leave their mark on musical theater. Filmmaker Michael Kantor focuses on this central question left largely unaddressed in his Emmy-winning Broadway: The American Musical, combining interviews with performance footage, including many of the rousing anthems and timeless ballads America has loved for a century.
