Bel Canto The Opera (Episode #4106H)
KQED 9: Fri, Jan 13, 2017 -- 9:00 PM
In December 2015, the Lyric Opera of Chicago premiered an opera adaptation of the novel Bel Canto, based on the best-seller by Ann Patchett. Commissioned as part of the Lyric's Renee Fleming Initiative, Bel Canto: The Opera tells a gripping contemporary story inspired by the 126-day hostage crisis at the Japanese ambassador's house in Lima, Peru, over the course of 1996-97. Central to the story is the fictional soprano Roxanne Coss, portrayed by Australian-born American soprano Danielle de Niese. Like the novel, the opera explores the tensions and unexpected alliances between terrorists and their hostages. Featuring a score is by gifted young Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez, the libretto is by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. The production is conducted by Lyric music director Sir Andrew Davis and directed by Kevin Newbury.
