Episode #2634

KQED World: Sat, Oct 28, 2017 -- 4:00 AM

The unconventional Manal Omar is this week's Women Thought Leader. Focusing on women's rights, humanitarian aid, and peace-building for more than 15 years, Omar continues her interfaith work and empowerment of women in Muslim communities. One focus - Muslim women and sexuality.
FROM THIS WEEK'S SHOW: "What hasn't happened really is the conversation on sexuality, especially from a sex positive lens. We've had great organizations tackling domestic violence, tackling sexual abuse in the mosque. ..... but that sex positive conversation, which I argue is an essential part of Islam because Islam talks about how you connect with the divine through all your senses, is still a missing gap."
BEYOND THE BATTLE: "I honor all those who are at the front lines fighting for women's rights.... But, it's time for us to unplug from the war machine and from the conflict machine and to really talk about the power of women from a place of joy and I know that's a hard sell in this day and age, but someone has to ring that bell."
