Tim O'brien and Ron Block (Episode #1902H)

KQED Life: Sat, May 20, 2017 -- 7:00 PM

Tim O'Brien is one of titans of roots-music. Between collaborations with Darrell Scott, the recent Grammy winning recording with Jerry Douglas's Earls of Leicester and the rebooting of Hot Rize; it has been four years since Tim's last solo recording. Still, somewhere in O'Brien's vivid imagination, the seeds of 'Pompadour' began to sprout. The fruits of his recent wanderings, music making and worldly observations have blossomed into eleven exquisitely varied, true to life and above all musical tracks.
Ron Block has long since secured his reputation as a deeply thoughtful and accomplished musician. After two-decades as part of Alison Krauss' band, Union Station, with whom he's earned a collection of GrammyA?, IBMA, and Dove awards, as well as many years as a songwriter and sideman for the likes of Rhonda Vincent, Randy Travis, The Boxcars, The Cox Family, Dailey & Vincent, Dolly Parton, and Vince Gill, Block now presents his new solo album, 'Hogan's House of Music'. WoodSongs Kid: Marteka & William Lake hail from Hacker Valley, West Virginia. This sister and brother duo play bluegrass in the Flatt and Scruggs style.

Sweet Honey in the Rock (Episode #1901H)

KQED Life: Sat, May 13, 2017 -- 7:00 PM

Sweet Honey in the Rock are Grammy winning folk and civil rights legends who express their history as African-American women through a capella song, dance, and even sign language. While there is no doubt the uniqueness of Sweet Honey is the message, her musical sound is what attracts first-time listeners. Described in the magazine High Fidelity as "breathtaking excursions into harmony singing" and "neck-hair raising" in Downbeat, one is startled at the many musical guises through which the message may appear. WoodSongs is proud to present this Special Event Broadcast from this legacy ensemble as they perform songs from their latest album 'LoveInEvolution'. WoodSongs Kids: Students of Lexington's SCAPA Vocals will be performing the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome".
