Reconstruction of Asa Carter Previous Broadcasts

KQED 9: Mon, Jan 28, 2013 -- 11:00 PM

This program explores the life and legacy of the best-selling novelist of The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (republished in 1975 as Gone to Texas) and The Education of Little Tree (1976). Billed as an autobiographical story about an orphaned Native American boy, The Education of Little Tree was later revealed as a complete fabrication. The author: notorious white supremacist and Ku Klux Klan leader Asa Earl Carter (under the name Forrest Carter), the writer responsible for George Wallace's infamous 1963 "Segregation now! Segregation forever!" speech. Friends, colleagues and members of George Wallace's inner circle provide unprecedented access into the life of this enigmatic man, while scholars and historians reflect on the nature of Carter's identity shift, his place in the history of the civil-rights movement and his legacy.
