(DT9.1, 9.2, 9.3) This morning we had a very brief outage of our over the air (OTA) coverage for KQED 9.1/9.2/9.3, which lasted apx 4 minutes. Most tuners will have found the channel again as soon as service was restored, but some may need to be rescanned for channel 9. This outage did not affect [...]

Il Volo Takes Flight Previous Broadcasts

KQED 9: Mon, Mar 12, 2012 -- 7:30 PM

In May 2009, three fresh-faced teenagers, Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Ginaluca Ginoble appeared on the popular Italian talent show, Ti Lascio Una Canzone and dazzled television viewers with their flawless rendition of the Neapolitan standard "O Sole Mio." The boys who won the competition easily decided that their group needed a name. "Il Volo" meaning "flight" was chosen to signify the feeling that these three young tenors were about to spread their wings.
The Italian teen vocal group took the audience by storm during the taping at the Detroit Opera House, singing classical and traditional Italian songs that showcased their vocal talent as well as their interpretive gifts for music. Their versions of "O Sole Mio," "Il Mondo," and "E Piu Ti Penso," a medley of Ennio Morricone songs from the soundtracks to (Once Upon a Time in America and Malena) and the Charlie Chaplin song, "Smile," brought the audience to their feet as they exploded with applause for these gifted performers. A touching moment came when the boys sang the popular Italian song, "Mamma," and Ignazio and Piero went into the audience to hug their tearful moms.
Joining the tenors is Pia Toscano, a popular favorite from American Idol - Season 10, who joins the tenors to sing and dance to "La Luna Hizo Esto." Also performing is guitarist, Milos Karadaglic who boldly introduces the song "Granada."
