The Dream That Died (Episode #103)

KQED Life: Sat, Jan 26, 2013 -- 2:47 AM

With British and American armies poised to cross the Rhine and Soviet forces advancing towards Berlin, victory seemed certain and the Allies were planning a new Europe based on liberty and democracy. This edition draws on the memories of those who fought and on reconstructions to tell the story of the last desperate battles inside Germany and of how the dream of a new Europe crumbled in the ruins of Hitler's Reich. On 16 April 1945 the Soviets began their final assault on Berlin and fourteen days later Hitler was dead. But even before the victory celebrations were over, a new chill gripped the alliance. A new European order had emerged, but it was dominated by another dictator - the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

Allies at War (Episode #102)

KQED Life: Sat, Jan 26, 2013 -- 1:53 AM

By the end of August 1944, Hitler's armies were in headlong retreat to the borders of the Reich, but the Allied advance was threatened that autumn by a long and bitter battle fought in the conference chamber - for the right to direct the final assault on Germany. This episode tells the story of the behind-the-scenes battles over strategy that threatened to drive a wedge in the Anglo-American alliance. The damaging personality and policy clashes between the Supreme Commander, the American Dwight D Eisenhower, and the commander of British forces in the field, Field Marshal Montgomery. Those who fought tell of the desperate allied struggle to capture the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem, and of the terrible winter battles in the Bulge when Hitler's armies threatened to turn allied victory into defeat.

Struggle to Breakout (Episode #101)

KQED Life: Sat, Jan 26, 2013 -- 1:00 AM

A drama-documentary narrated by Sean Bean about the decisive struggle to break out of the D-Day beachhead and advance across Normandy to begin the defeat of Hitler's Third Reich. The program draws on the memories of those from both sides involved in the close fighting that summer, and carefully researched drama scenes chart the growing tensions between Allied commanders Eisenhower and Montgomery.
