This program highlights two stories from the UK "Time Team" series: first, a closer look at the mysteries surrounding the true location of the Jamestown settlement. Thirteen years before the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from Plymouth in the Mayflower, the Jamestown settlers were building a colony on an island on the James River. They were to lose some of their number in clashes with native Indians and many more due to disease, largely caused by unhygienic water supplies. Twenty-five of them died in just four weeks and almost half of the original colonists were dead by the end of the settlement's first summer. For many years it was thought that nothing remained of the original settlement and that the fort and other structures had been lost to the river but Time Team makes some amazing discoveries. The second story celebrates the Queen's 80th birthday in August 2006 in the only way they knew how: by digging up her gardens. With unprecedented access, the team excavated at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Holyrood House in Edinburgh to explore the history and the origins of the palaces and answer intriguing questions about their pasts.
