Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson) turns to Poirot for assistance with his investigation into the apparent suicide of a beautiful young woman. The gun was found in her left hand, but the deceased is generally believed to have been right-handed. Was she in fact murdered by a sinister blackmailer? To the despair of keen golfer Hastings (Hugh Fraser), complete novice Poirot insists they play a round together. But Poirot has an ulterior motive- he is watching someone on the golf course.

Poirot is unenthusiastic when a Mrs. Todd asks him to find her a cook. He is positively insulted when she proceeds to dismiss him from the case with a one guinea fee for his services. There's no mystery too small for Hercule Poirot, and once he agrees to take on a case he sees it through to a conclusion. Poirot has also realized that there is a great deal more to the cook's disappearance than meets the eye.

A particularly ingenious murder is committed on the noon flight from Paris to London. Poirot is on board - but unfortunately he's asleep when the killing takes place. It becomes a matter of pride for him to track down the murderer. Returning to Paris, he discovers his chief suspect is a mysterious American - all the more mysterious because there wasn't an American on board.

"C" is for Churston, the tiny Devonshire village where Sir Carmichael Clarke is murdered. Beside each body lies a copy of the ABC Railway Guide - open at the relevant page. The police are baffled. But the murderer has already made a grave mistake. He has challenged Hercule Poirot to unmask him.
