Local Artists from San Jose to Santa Cruz (Episode #505H)

* This week we take a look behind the curtains to learn how a ballet is born. We'll meet Local Ballerina Karen Gabey, conductor George Daugherty and chat with choreographer Jessica Lang as she rehearses her new ballet, Eightyone. We'll even learn some fun facts about ballet shoes.
* In between we'll meet some local visual artists. First, Susana Arias, an international painter and sculptor who shows us how she approaches her really big canvases.
* Then it's off to the colorful and quirky studio of Beth Grippenstraw, whose art reflects her somewhat skewed view of the world as she battles chronic vertigo.

Finally, we get to know Annie Morhauser whose handcrafted Annieglass pieces are displayed in the White House and the Smithsonian.

Then meet Doug Haut, one of surfing's great board shapers. For fifty years, Haut has been designing surfboards that help define the artistry of surfing.

* Barbara London is an heroic pilot from Los Gatos, a Congressional Gold Medal recipient, a member of the WASPs, and the only woman to be awarded the Air Medal during World War II.
* Les Williams, a Tuskegee Airman, was one of the very first black Americans to become a bomber pilot.

Also profiled are Greg Kihn, the Bay Area's top disc jockey, and artist Scott Weaver who has re-created the city of San Francisco in toothpicks.

      UPDATE: signal was restored apx 6pm (DT25.1 through 25.3) We are aware that our transmitter servicing the Watsonville/Monterey/Salinas area, KQET, is off the air. Engineers are on their way from San Francisco to check it out. Estimated time for repairs not yet known.

    • Planned KQET (DT25) outage: early Sun 12/18 apx 1am

      (DT25.1 through 25.3) Due to maintenance and software update work being done by one of the paid signal providers, KQET-25 will need to go off the air for apx 15-30 minutes at apx 1am.
