More than 100 years later, a tall figure drops a rose on to Janet Burrows' grave in Lamberley churchyard. He is John Stockton, a descendant of the fire's victim, who has recently arrived in the village, and is already a source of discomfort to the locals. His ancestors were deemed by the villagers to be vampires. The local vicar enlists Holmes and Watson to uncover a rational explanation for the unrest in the village. Roy Marsden (Foyle's War, "Inspector Adam Dalgliesh" in many P.D Jamesmysteries ) plays John Stockton.
