It is nearing the end of the eighteenth century. At dead of night, a young girl Janet Burrows - blood pouring from a wound in her neck - is carried to the porch of the church in the village of Lamberley. After the villagers hear her dying screams, they run with their blazing torches to attack the village's grand mansion, consigning Lord St Clair, the aristocratic owner, to a fiery death in the collapsing ruins of his ancestral home. More than 100 years later, a tall figure drops a rose on to Janet Burrows' grave in Lamberley churchyard. He is John Stockton, a descendant of the fire's victim, who has recently arrived in the village, and is already a source of discomfort to the locals. His ancestors were deemed by the villagers to be vampires. The local vicar enlists Holmes and Watson to uncover a rational explanation for the unrest in the village. Roy Marsden (Foyle's War, "Inspector Adam Dalgliesh" in many P.D Jamesmysteries ) plays John Stockton.
