Throughout Guatemala, Easter Week (Semana Santa) is celebrated as the most significant and festive season on every religious and social calendar. Joseph travels to Guatemala City, Antiqua and Lago de Atitlan and discovers that while the observance is rich in Roman Catholic ceremony and tradition, at the same time it leaves room for the popular devotion and beliefs of the indigenous Mayan culture. In addition, the communal creation of hundreds of beautiful alfombras -- flower-strewn, multi-colored "carpets" -- that line the streets in front of the religious processions is something to behold. The pomp, color, emotion and devout expression all combine to create an once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.

The rest of the area's flora and fauna is equally impressive with more than 140 orchid species and 275 bird species, dozens of them found only in the highlands of Central Africa. In addition to the wildlife wonders, Joseph has personal encounters in the local Banda (thatched-hut) communities and meets the reclusive and vanishing Batwa people. In Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, Joseph highlights the 1994 Rwanda genocide and the efforts that the country has made to overcome its past at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre.

Rwanda - Among The Gorillas (Episode #512H)

Joseph follows in the footsteps of Dian Fossey when he treks into the mountain forest of the Parc National des Volcans. Within sight of the five Virunga Range volcanoes he travels in search of Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. In addition he takes part in Rwanda's monthly national day of service, a program that is the heart of Rwanda's dedication to attack the ideology of genocide at its root - ethnic division.
