Rwanda - In Search of Chimpanzees (Episode #513)

Joseph continues his Rwanda adventure and turns his attention to the region's other primate populations. Chimpanzee, Olive Baboons, Mona, Blue and Black and White Colobus Monkeys are just a few of the thirteen primate species that populate the Nyungwe National Park. The rest of the area's flora and fauna is equally impressive with more than 140 orchid species and 275 bird species, dozens of them found only in the highlands of Central Africa. In addition to the wildlife wonders, Joseph has personal encounters in the local Banda (thatched-hut) communities and meets the reclusive and vanishing Batwa people. In Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, Joseph highlights the 1994 Rwanda genocide and the efforts that the country has made to overcome its past at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre.

Joseph follows in the footsteps of Dian Fossey when he treks into the mountain forest of the Parc National des Volcans. Within sight of the five Virunga Range volcanoes he travels in search of Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. As with every Travelscope adventure, the journey includes cultural experiences in a local church, living museum, market, primary school and health clinic. In addition he takes part in Rwanda's monthly national day of service, a program that is the heart of Rwanda's dedication to attack the ideology of genocide at its root - ethnic division.

Taiwan - The Culture of Tea (Episode #507H)

The mystery and majesty of tea is explored when Joseph spotlights the culture of this royal beverage on Taiwan. During this adventure he travels to Lujang to join in the creation of traditional tea snacks, visits an Assam tea farm in Nantou, participates in a formal tea ceremony in Tainan and tops it all off with a visit to the annual Lantern Festival in Chiayi. Along the way he meets the masters of Taiwan's pottery, tin-sculpting and lantern-making arts.

In every season the pleasures are easy in this laid back Southern town where often the best thing to do is nothing. The active visitor has plenty to keep them busy and Joseph tries his hand at swimming, fishing, kayaking, crawfish shucking and dancing a two step or three. In keeping with his joy of lifelong learning, he hops aboard a University of Texas research vessel for a cruise of the bay and a look it's denizens of the deep.

Ireland - The West Is Best (Episode #506H)

Joseph starts his Ireland adventure in the town of Shannon and then heads southwest to the Dingle Peninsula. While on the Peninsula he uncovers a few important Irish secrets like how to draw a proper pint, spout a wee bit of Gaelic without getting tongue-tied, how to root for your horse home at the Dingle races and which pub has the best Irish soda bread and stew. Then he heads to the Puck Festival in Killorglin on the Ring of Kerry for some Irish merrymaking. Joseph also learns about the Irish emigration to America and hears the story of the Blasket Islanders - a modern-day Irish migration saga.

Throughout Guatemala, Easter Week (Semana Santa) is celebrated as the most significant and festive season on every religious and social calendar. Joseph travels to Guatemala City, Antiqua and Lago de Atitlan and discovers that while the observance is rich in Roman Catholic ceremony and tradition, at the same time it leaves room for the popular devotion and beliefs of the indigenous Mayan culture. In addition, the communal creation of hundreds of beautiful alfombras -- flower-strewn, multi-colored "carpets" -- that line the streets in front of the religious processions is something to behold. The pomp, color, emotion and devout expression all combine to create an once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.
