Sweet Tornado: Margo Jones and the American Theater Previous Broadcasts

KQED World: Tue, Aug 13, 2013 -- 5:00 AM

Although few know her name today, theater producer-director Margo Jones left a rich cultural legacy. During the 1940s and '50s, Jones -nicknamed the "Texas Tornado" for her larger-than-life personality -pioneered the regional theater movement, championed the work of new playwrights, including Tennessee Williams, and crusaded against the commercial domination of New York theater. But despite her idealism, energy, warmth and salesmanship, Jones struggled with loneliness, frustration and doubt. Her untimely death at age 43 came just six months following her triumphant world premiere of the play, Inherit the Wind. This program captures the remarkable life and times of this American visionary by weaving together theatrical representations and excerpts from three plays with interviews, archival photographs and rarely seen film footage. The powerful performance documentary, narrated by Academy Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden, stars Judith Ivey as Jones and Richard Thomas as Williams.

(DT54.1 thru 54.5) Assuming that the weather and road conditions permit, we plan to do a bit of maintenance on our KQEH transmitter the morning of Friday 12/05… hopefully 10am-11am-ish, but could be a bit later. Most of the work should not affect the outgoing signal, but there will need to be a cable swap […]

Another station needs to do maintenance on its equipment on the tower on Monument Peak, requiring that we switch our DT54 Over the Air signal from the main antenna to the auxiliary when the work starts, then back to the main antenna at the conclusion. These switches should cause momentary outages only, and most receivers […]
