2005 LGBT Local Heroes:
Camille Maran

San Francisco LGBT Community Center

Camille Maran
Camille Maran is one of the leading advocates against professional psychiatric and therapeutic abuse of gender variant children and lesbian gay bisexual and transgender youth for many decades. In the mid-'90s she worked with the city of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution stating that gender variant children should not be diagnosed as "disordered." Maran's work has prevented the mistreatment of children stigmatized for their sexual orientation or gender variance.

Maran is credited for the development of the Psychiatric Survivors' Memorial Skylight at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. Located in the 3rd floor of The Center's Victorian wing, the stained glass skylight honors LGBT people who have experienced psychiatric abuse and oppression because of their sexual orientation and gender variance. Maran also currently stands as the San Francisco LGBT Community Center's longest standing volunteer, working for over 10 years.

Maran also produces the Vie En Rose Awards, which is now in its third year. The Vie En Rose Awards recognizes individuals and groups who work towards ending the therapeutic abuse of children and youth. She has been recognized for her work by the Community United against Violence and the LGBT Pride Committee.
