2006 Latino Heritage Local Heroes:
Dr. Roberto Vargas
New World Associates

Dr. Roberto Vargas
Dr. Roberto Vargas is a cultural activist, ceremony leader, and planning consultant for New World Associates. He applies the Porvida™ Approach to assist proactive organizations become more effective teams guided by clear goals and supportive leadership. Many Bay Area organizations are grateful to Dr. Vargas for his consultations on community problem-solving, multicultural team-building, and organizational and leadership development. Similarly, many family networks have praised him for his service as a spirit guide and ceremony facilitator during their times of family challenge or celebration.

Some of his many contributions to the Bay Area include co-founding La Clinica Mental Heath Services (Oakland, 1974), La Familia Counseling Center (Hayward, 1976), the Latino Men's Council (Oakland, 1986), and the Days of the Dead Program of the Oakland Museum of California (1993), which draws over 18,000 persons to the Museum annually to learn about the practice of this tradition for family healing and honoring deceased loved ones.
