2003 Latino Heritage Local Heroes:
Patricia Rodriguez

Patricia Rodriguez
Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts

Patricia Rodriguez is currently serving as Gallery Director at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco, supporting and promoting Latino/Latina emerging artists, as well as recognized Latino artists from the Bay Area. The work includes curating and presenting art exhibits that serve the entire Latino community, including artists with HIV, those with disabilities, youth and women artists, international artists and emerging artists. Art shows include a round table with artists showing their work and sharing their experiences with the community. Patricia coordinates special events that allow artists to show their work in art bazaars.

Patricia is known for her contributions to the mural movement of the 1970s. She is creator and co-founder of the Mujeres Muralistas, the first Chicana women's mural collective in San rancisco. The murals are featured in many art books and journals. Patricia was a resident of 66 Balmy, an art space off of Valencia, for 17 years, and she invited local artists to paint Balmy Alley's first round of murals between 1972 and 1990. She also teaches at numerous colleges and universities in California, New Mexico and Arizona.
