2004 Latino Heritage Local Heroes:
Juan Aurelio Dominguez

Juan Aurelio Dominguez
Juan Aurelio Dominguez is program manager for San Francisco's Grants for the Arts/Hotel Tax Fund, which provides municipal funding and support for a variety of arts and cultural programs in San Francisco. For the past three years, he also has served as chair and co-chair of the Arts Loan Fund, a collaborative effort by art funders and grant-makers in Northern California to provide low-interest, emergency loans to nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists.

Dominguez's philanthropic work began at the San Francisco Foundation, where he worked in grant-making and community organizing. Later, he served as program coordinator for Hispanics in Philanthropy and coordinated community and studio art educational programs at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has consulted for several local Latino nonprofits, including the immigrant-rights community groups Central American Resource Center and Centro Latino Cuscatlán.

Dominguez was a founding member of the Bay Area's celebration of National Dance Week, which highlights dance activities in a week-long series of free, open studio activities, a model that has been adopted by other major North American cities. He is a classically trained dancer whose career has encompassed many companies and styles. Locally, he has performed with Khadra Ballet Ensemble, Tango! Argentina Folk Ballet, Pan American Dance Company and Forgatós Hungarian Dance Ensemble.
