2004 Latino Heritage Local Heroes: Elena Egan-Caceres
Elena Egan-Caceres serves as director of Latina services for Women Organized to Make Abuse Non-existent (W.O.M.A.N. Inc.). W.O.M.A.N. Inc. is a community-based nonprofit multi-service agency serving battered women and their children in the Bay Area.
For the last 10 years, Egan-Caceres has been educating and informing Latinas in the Bay Area on how to end domestic violence. She assists her clients by organizing and leading group counseling sessions, by guiding them through legal proceedings in the English-speaking court system and, in some cases, by helping them find food and shelter. Over the years, Egan-Caceres has helped numerous women and their children find a better life.
Egan-Caceres also has served for the last three years as the board president for POCOVI, which provides treatment in Spanish for batterers. She coordinates training programs for men who want to assist in helping batterers change their violent behavior.
After spending her days at W.O.M.A.N. Inc., Egan-Caceres volunteers as both a school board member and a volleyball coach at the school attended by her three children in the Richmond.
