2004 Local Heroes

Dr. Samuel So
Founder and Director, Asian Liver Center, Stanford University

Dr. Samuel So
Dr. Samuel So is a professor of surgery and director of the Liver Cancer Program at Stanford University Medical Center. In 1996, he founded the Asian Liver Center to address the disproportionately high occurrence of hepatitis B and liver cancer in the Asian Pacific American population. The goal of the center is to find new diagnostic and treatment approaches, as well as initiate disease prevention programs. Since 1999, Dr. So has led an international collaborative research team in studying the genetics of liver and stomach cancers, while continuing his efforts to eradicate cultural and ethnic disparities in healthcare access, delivery and disease prevention. Under his guidance, the Asian Liver Center launched the Jade Ribbon Campaign, a culturally targeted education campaign to highlight the importance of getting screened for hepatitis B and has extended the campaign to Southern California, Taiwan and China.
