2005 Local Heroes

Jerrold A. Hiura, DDS
California State Arts Council
San Jose, CA

Jerrold A. Hiura, DDS
Jerrold A. Hiura is currently the vice chair of the California Arts Commission and is well known in the arts community because of his efforts to promote local artists and Asian American arts through theatre, film and music. He co-founded the Contemporary Asian Theatre Scene in 1974, and currently serves as president.

Dr. Hiura's work has contributed greatly to keeping Asian art alive in the Bay Area. He also works hard to preserve the heritage of the last remaining Japantowns in America, including his personal efforts to preserve those in San Jose, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Jerry's work with the San Jose Japantown helped it earn recognition as a National Historic Site.

Along with running his dental practice, Dr. Hiura also serves on the boards of Compass Point, the Silicon Valley Japanese American Chamber of Commerce and more. He is past president of the Silicon Valley Arts Council and a former board member of Asian Americans for Community Involvement. His energy, dedication and volunteer efforts inspire others to dedicate themselves to their personal causes.
