Chi Mei Yeung, a garment worker for 22 years, and Kwei Fong Lin, a garment worker for 10 years, have been involved with Asian Immigrant Women Advocates for almost 10 years. Their grassroots leadership has been dedicated to improving the lives of their fellow garment workers through education, training and advocacy. In 1998, the two women began working with AIWA's Health and Safety committee to combat poor working conditions and repetitive stress injuries. After conducting surveys with hundreds of women, they worked with UC San Francisco to develop basic treatment, stretching classes and health and safety training, helping almost 200 garment workers in Oakland. The two have enlisted the support of employers, the City of Oakland, and Alameda County, which will lead to additional, significant improvements in the quality of the garment industry work environment. Their most recent accomplishment is the design and testing of an ergonomic chair, especially designed to reduce stress injury in the sewing workplace.
