American Indian Heritage 2004 Local Heroes:
Martin Waukazoo, Native American Health Center

Martin Waukazoo
Honoree Martin Waukazoo is chief executive officer of the Native American Health Center, which provides a full range of community healthcare and prevention services, including primary medical care, comprehensive dental care, health education, youth services, nutrition counseling, HIV/AIDS prevention and substance abuse counseling.

Under Waukazoo's leadership the Native American Health Center became the largest urban Indian community healthcare provider in the country. Waukazoo also increased organizational revenue by 600 percent over the past ten years; purchased the center's four-story, 20,000-square-foot building, which it now owns; and diversified services and income streams to meet the growing needs of the community

Waukazoo is working to fortify the future of the organization by serving as a member of the Seven Directions Project, which is constructing a new 26,000-square-foot medical facility with 38 units of affordable family housing in Oakland. The new facility is designed to implement Native American Health Center's holistic health care model by increasing efficiency, integrating services and providing an outdoor ceremonial space.
