American Indian Heritage 2004 Local Heroes:
Lisa Carrier, Mutsun Language Foundation
Honoree Lisa Carrier is co-founder, secretary and treasurer, and marketing director of the Mutsun Language Foundation. She is also the Amah Mutsun Tribal Council secretary and director of the Humunya Foundation.
For more than eight years, Carrier has taught Mutsun traditions through presentations and classroom demonstrations at schools, universities, and state, regional and county parks and for the native people in her community. She continues to preserve her Mutsun heritage through basket weaving, storytelling, music, dance, regalia making and horticulture. She also makes traditional-style jewelry which helps fund the Mutsun Language Foundation.
Carrier is writer and editor for the Tribal Voice, the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band newsletter, which fortifies interaction with other California native communities. She coordinates the annual fall gathering for California Native Peoples day at the San Luis Reservoir State Park.
