Family Workshops
KQED Early Learning
Workshops for Professionals, Parents and Families
(Professional workshops are three to four hours and include more child development content and adult learning strategies. Parent workshops are two hours, family workshops are one hour)

Exploring Art and Literacy
Art is an excellent tool for self-expression. Discover ways to bring out the artist in the youngsters you care for by using a wide range of art materials and the PBS Learning Triangle model--view, read and do. Find out how this important form of self-expression supports emerging literacy skills. Materials and books will be provided.

Music and Literacy
Children enjoy music, lyrics and rhyme. This workshop will provide methods to incorporate books and music into their everyday learning activities. You'll read popular books, make and/or play instruments, dance and have fun. Participants will receive educational materials and books to take home.

Math and Literacy
Discover ways to use the award-winning Reading Rainbow series along with books and activities to encourage and enhance early math skills. Participants will receive a theme-related children's book and a Reading Rainbow curriculum guide.

Health Series
This workshop series expands the educational content of PBS Kids programs and other programs with health-related content-Sesame Street and Arthur plus the KQED produced Children and Asthma through fun View, Read, and Do Learning Triangle models. This educational teaching tool incorporates interactive viewing, theme-related reading/sharing stories and developmentally appropriate activities. Participants will be guided through an interactive process that encourage healthy habits. Content includes preparing children for doctor visits, managing triggers for children with Asthma, preventing the spread of head lice and preventing contact with lead poisoning. Learn how to support health and safety practices while using theme-related books to encourage emergent literacy skills.

Sesame Street Beginnings Workshop Series
Discover how to use the award-winning Sesame Street Beginnings: Language to Literacy and Talk, Read, and Write workshops to provide useful and simple tools for the parents you serve. Learn more about the magic of Sesame Street and how it supports language and literacy development in children. Videos, books and other take-home materials will be provided.

Lullabies to Literacy
Emergent literacy begins with strong secure relationships. The workshop focuses on helping caregivers understand the importance of their role in helping to nurture literacy skills in young children.

Social Emotional Series
Unresolved emotional issues in young children may lead to behavioral, peer and learning problems. Child Care Professionals can provide an important foundation for future emotional stability and successful relationships. This workshop provides useful techniques to help young children mange their anger, support their self-regulation and to provide emotion coaching. Video clips, discussion, hands-on activities and books are used as tools for understanding, supporting and encouraging youngsters to express their feelings in appropriate ways.

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood's "Mad Feelings" Workshop
This three hour professional development workshop teaches developmentally appropriate techniques designed to help children manage their angry feelings and gain self-control. Participants will receive a handsome tote bag with many resources to use for family workshops.

Challenging Behaviors Workshop
Participants will gain a greater understanding of behaviors that are usually referred to as"challenging" to begin to see the child in their care in new ways, such as discovering patterns of behavior and intervention techniques to help the child self-regulate and gain control.

Emotional Coaching Workshop
Emotional Coaching is based on Dr, John Gottman's work offers a supportive way to help children handle their feelings. With this approach, children learn how emotions work and how to behave in healthy ways when their emotions on strong. Participants will learn ways to model Emotional Coaching technigues

Parenting Counts Workshops
(one to two hour workshops)
A series of nine workshops based on nine, one-minute, on air spots designed to give parents researched-based information on how to best support their child's growth and development. Topics range from dealing with tantrums to emergent literacy. The messages are a clear and straightforward "Children learn by watching you; If you value their feelings, they will too"

A Place of Our Own Workshops (two to three hours)
Workshops are based on the broad content from the daily television series. There is a range of important topics: literacy, health, music, self-esteem to name a few. The show was developed to address the unique needs of people who care for children. They may be family, friends or neighbors. The show and workshops model that every interaction and activity these adults share with young children are valuable opportunities to help children learn and grow.
